SKN γForce: Analysis of quartz etching process using optical microscope imaging (IA), laser diffraction (LD) and weight loss (ML) particle size estimation
Poręba et al. (2022) conducted a time-dependant quartz etching analysis of a material (180-200 μm) obtained from an active sand mine in Poland. Routine TCD pre-treatment was applied, followed by dividing the sample material into small batches – each then etched for a different amount of time (0-180 min).
Batches of grains were then compared using IA, LD and ML techniques, each providing different information on the etching process – including grain behaviour during etching and resulting grain size estimates, as well as etch depth. The conclusion is that the quartz etching process is different in reality than classical theory predicts.
