Biografia    

Prof. dr hab. inż. Mieczysław Metzger, profesor zwyczajny Politechniki Śląskiej rozpoczął pracę na Politechnice Śląskiej bezpośrednio po ukończeniu studiów pod koniec 1971 roku. Od początku pracuje w Zakładzie Urządzeń i Układów Automatyki (obecnie w ramach Instytutu Automatyki). W 1992 roku, objął kierownictwo Zakładu.


W ramach swojej działalności naukowej uzyskał znaczące rezultaty w dziedzinie automatyki, informatyki i biotechnologii przemysłowej. W 1978 roku obronił z wyróżnieniem pracę doktorską, nagrodzoną również Nagrodą Ministra, natomiast w 1989 roku została zatwierdzona habilitacja – również nagrodzona Nagrodą Ministra. W styczniu 2001 roku uzyskał tytuł profesora. Dorobek naukowy obejmuje około 200 publikacji naukowych o zasięgu międzynarodowym. Znaczna część publikacji ukazała się w czasopismach o zasięgu międzynarodowym (takich jak m.in. indeksowane w bazie ISI Web of Knowledge): AICHE Journal; Computers and Chemical Engineering; Chemical Engineering and Processing; Control-Theory and Advanced Technology; Control & Cybernetics; IEEE – Transactions on Industrial Informatics; IEEE – Transactions on Man, Systems and Cybernetics; Simulation; Simulation-Practice and Theory, Water Science and Technology) lub w materiałach pokonferencyjnych wydanych przez renomowane wydawnictwa międzynarodowe (w tym w serii książkowej Springer Lecture Notes). Jest członkiem międzynarodowych towarzystw Naukowych IWA oraz IEEE. Wielokrotnie był nagradzany Nagrodami Rektora za osiągnięcia naukowe. Od początku systemu grantów uzyskał ich 11. Kierował również wieloma tzw. pracami zleconymi, tematami BK, BW.


Prof. M.Metzger ma istotne osiągnięcia w zakresie dydaktyki i opieki nad młodą kadrą naukową. Jest promotorem 9 zakończonych przewodów doktorskich. Obecnie sprawuje opiekę nad dalszymi pięcioma doktorantami w tym czterech z nich ma otwarte przewody doktorskie. W latach 2002-2003 przygotował (wraz z prof. A. Świerniakiem) autorską koncepcję i program nowej specjalności “Przetwarzanie informacji i sterowanie w biotechnologii”. Jego udział dotyczy zastosowań biotechnologii w ochronie środowiska i przemyśle żywnościowym. Jest również kierownikiem tej specjalności.


W ramach pracy organizacyjnej pełni szereg funkcji na Uczelni. Od 1992 roku jest zastępcą Dyrektora Instytutu Automatyki d/s Nauki oraz kierownikiem Zakładu Urządzeń i Układów Automatyki w tym instytucie. W latach 1994-1997 był kierownikiem studium podyplomowego Sterowniki i Układy Sterowania. Od 2003 roku jest kierownikiem specjalności “Przetwarzanie informacji i sterowanie w biotechnologii” na kierunku Automatyka.


Wyjątkowym (i to na tle ogólnopolskim) w silnie zmatematyzowanej dziedzinie automatyki dorobkiem prof. Metzgera jest dorobek w zakresie projektowania i uruchamiania pilotażowych stanowisk badawczych w skali półprzemysłowej. W ostatnich latach powstały według jego pomysłów i projektów cztery instalacje badawcze wyposażone w profesjonalny sprzęt automatyki i będące poligonem doświadczalnym zaawansowanej automatyki i informatyki. Pozwala to na badania własnych rozwiązań sprzętu i oprogramowania. Najnowszym pomysłem są aktualnie wdrażane, nadrzędne, rozproszone systemy sterowania i przetwarzania informacji dla tych pilotażowych obiektów automatyki bazujące na przemysłowych sieciach transferu informacji ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem technologii agentów. Naturalną konsekwencją skupiania uwagi na obiektach sterowania jest rozszerzenie obecnych badań Zakładu na obiekty automatyki w skali mikro takie jak biomikroreaktory.


Prof. Mieczysław Metzger stworzył na Politechnice Śląskiej zalążki szkoły naukowej w zakresie “zastosowań modeli fenomenologicznych w automatyce, informatyce i biotechnologii przemysłowej”.
