Harmonizations of Autonomous Vehicle Safety Validation and Verification for Higher Education

Objectives
The SaveAV grant, held under the Erasmus+ KA2 Higher Education initiative, has been established to support a consortium comprising universities and SMEs dedicated to enhancing and standardising autonomous vehicles (AV) safety aspects. Under this grant, efforts are aimed at fostering a robust collaboration among academic institutions, small and medium enterprises, and relevant alliances focusing on AV safety. Through the SaveAV initiative, the importance of AV safety is intended to be highlighted among newly educated engineers across Europe, contributing to the development of safer transportation and living environments in the future. Additionally, responsible engineering practices for AI-powered AV systems are encouraged, aligning with Erasmus+ KA2’s goal of promoting high-quality education, innovation, and skills.

Activities
The implementation consists of analysing standards, frameworks, developments, etc., to build a shared understanding of AV safety for higher education. Based on the analysis, open AV safety-related flexible syllabus modules for HE at the bachelor and master levels were developed. To achieve high-quality modern educational outcomes, open-source frameworks, public MOOC e-courses, and teaching and learning materials, i.e., digital content and AI-based course tools, will be implemented.

Impact
Expected outcomes cover:

  • AV course on bachelor level (5-6 ECP);
  • AV safety Validation and Verification (V&V) plug-in modules (B and M level) (2-3 ECP);
  • AV Safety V&V open-source framework adapted for higher education;
  • Public e-course on AV Safety V&V with online lectures and hands-on material;
  • Practical use case examples where universities and SMEs are involved (AV shuttle, delivery robot, drone, F/10, etc.);
  • AI-enhanced tool for combining the best educational units for educational use cases.
