Dr hab. inż. Elżbieta Kasperska has passed away

It is with deep regret that we announce that on 24 September 2025, at the age of 71,
dr hab. inż. Elżbieta Kasperska
 retired employee of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, passed away.

Elżbieta_Kasperska.png (148,12 kB)She graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the Silesian University of Technology in 1978. After graduation, she took up a position at the Polish Academy of Sciences in the Department of Management Sciences, where she obtained a PhD in economics in 1990. In the same year, she was employed at the Institute of Mathematics at the Silesian University of Technology, where she worked until her retirement in 2018. In 2011, she obtained a postdoctoral degree in economics awarded by the Faculty of Management at the University of Warsaw.

In her scientific work, she dealt with simulation modelling in management, in particular issues related to the System Dynamics method. She was a co-author of the engineering study programme in the field of mathematical methods in management. In 2008-2012, she was a member of the project team for the introduction of a management control system at the Silesian University of Technology. In 2012-2016, she was the representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics for the management control system. For many years, she was a member of the System Dynamics Society.

In 2009, the Senate of the Silesian University of Technology awarded her the ‘Distinguished Service to the Silesian University of Technology’ badge.

In Dr Elżbieta Kasperska, we have lost an outstanding teacher and mentor to many generations of students at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Her colleagues and students valued her extensive knowledge, kindness and smile. She will be remembered as an excellent lecturer who had a good rapport with students and as a sensitive, warm and cordial person.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

A Holy Mass will be celebrated on 30 September 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Corpus Christi Parish Church in Bytom-Miechowice, followed by funeral ceremonies at the parish cemetery in Bytom-Miechowice.

Success of students from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics at BIT Festival 2025 - Hackathon

A team of students from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, consisting of Rafał Gibała, Paweł Hajok, and Karol Zając (‘Monkey Testing’), took third place during the Hackathon held as part of BITFestival 2025 (29 November 2025 - 30 November 2025).

It is with deep regret that we announce that on 2 January 2026, at the age of 93, Dr Bronisław Szlęk, a long-standing and distinguished employee of the Silesian University of Technology (1955–2008), passed away.
