The Faculty of Applied Mathematics was established under the name Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in 1969 It was created by combining the departments of physics, mathematics and the Department of Descriptive Geometry operating at various faculties of the Silesian University of Technology. the first department of this type at technical universities. As a result of organizational changes in 2011, the current name of the Faculty was adopted. There are two departments within the Faculty: Department of Mathematics and Department of Applications of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Methods, whose employees conduct research and education in two fields of first- and second-cycle studies: Mathematics (general academic profile) and Informatics (practical profile).
Faculty employees also conduct mathematics classes in other fields of study at the Silesian University of Technology.
The high scientific activity of the Faculty's employees is manifested primarily by numerous publications in the best international journals. In the last parametric assessment of scientific units in 2017, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics obtained the scientific category "A".
The Faculty of Applied Mathematics is characterized by: modern computer laboratories and professional and committed staff. Thanks to these factors, the Faculty's graduates are high-class specialists sought after on the labor market.
