Faculty of Civil Engineering

On December 11, 2023, at the headquarters of the General Directorate of National Roads and Highways, a ceremony was held to present awards in the III. edition of the nationwide competition "Innovations in Road Engineering". The engineering and diploma works of the students of our department were once again highly appreciated by the competition's chapter. This year, from among the 29. submitted works, in three competition categories, recognition was gained by 3. works of our students, which took places on the podium!

In the "Road Materials and Technologies" category, the second place was awarded to Barbara Chlipalska, M.Sc., a graduate of the Road Construction specialty. The topic of the work was: "Influence of a fire caused by ignition of gasoline on a road pavement on selected properties of the wearing layer", the supervisor - Wojciech Sorociak, PhD, Eng. The third place was awarded to Jakub Stajewski, a graduate of the Road Construction specialty, the topic of the thesis was: "Evaluation of the possibility of using fiber-optic sensors for a system of continuous monitoring of pavement bearing capacity on the basis of actual measurement of deformations in the mineral-asphalt package", supervisor - Dr. Marcin Grygierek, Eng. Unfortunately, Eng. Jakub was not present at the diploma distribution, because at the time, he was equally usefully spending his time exploring the achievements of Asian engineers from Taiwan.

In the category "Road engineering structures", the third place was awarded to Natalia Marcinkiewicz, M.Sc. graduate of the specialty Bridges with BIM technology, the topic of the work was "Graphical programming in the analysis and selection of replacement structural solutions of the WA-427 viaduct in the course of the A1 highway", the thesis supervisor was Dr. Marcin Jasinski, M.Sc.

In all previous editions of this competition, graduates of the road specialty of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology have won top places, including winning the previous edition.
