Speakers' Corner - Update
Do you know that Speakers’ Corner, located in Hyde Park in London, is almost 170 years old? George Orwell called it ‘one of the minor wonders of the world.’ Freedom of speech is one of the essential privileges of liberal democracy, a written law as the First Amendment to the American Constitution. Since 1886, it has paved the way for other Speakers’ Corners in and outside the UK, where orators have a possibility to speak their minds, demonstrate their eloquence and celebrate freedom of speech.
Let us then graft this democratic tradition of public speaking onto the Department of Linguistics, launching students’ public platform, where all speech reigns free. Why don’t we congregate once a month during recess to expound our views, provide new insights and spark debates? You are at liberty to talk about virtually every subject, with the proviso that you do not offend anyone and avoid hate speech.
Have you got a story to tell? Are you a non-conformist or a rebel? Climb on your soapbox and make your voice heard. Air your views, challenge your audience, or invite and engage them in a discussion. University - the place of light, liberty and learning – is our Hyde Park, so let your voice reverberate through its halls while you get up on your soapbox in the Students’ Speakers’ Corner.

Here they come...
March is coming to an end, April is beginning, so we very officially invite you to enthusiastically participate in our Cathedral Project: Students' Speakers' Corner. The first edition, entitled Serial Killers: Real and Fictional, is scheduled for 19 April (Wednesday), so you can sign up today to speak at your chosen break between classes: at 9:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1 p.m. or 2:45 p.m.
We can listen to up to three orators in 15 minutes. We have anticipated your speech to be about 3 minutes, but we can manage 4 as well!
Perhaps there will be some questions from the audience? You never know!
