68th School of Illustrative Mathematics in Gliwice

The 68th School of Illustrative Mathematics (Szkoła Matematyki Poglądowej) has come to an end. It was organised by Ośrodek Kultury Matematycznej (Center for Mathematical Culture), Fundacja Matematyków Wrocławskich (Wrocław Mathematicians’ Foundation), and this year by Silesian University of Technology. This year’s main theme was: At the end, there isn’t always an answer (,,Na końcu nie zawsze jest odpowiedź’’). We had the great pleasure of welcoming outstanding mathematicians, students and enthusiasts of science from all over Poland.

The conference took place from 21 to 25 August and was attended by over 90 participants.

On Thursday evening, the art exhibition Indefinite Games (,,Gry nieoznaczone’’) by Agnieszka Cioch was opened. The following four days consisted of 20 lectures at the Education and Congress Centre, accompanied by many mathematical activities, including the city game Chrobra matma.

On Friday, the conference was officially opened with speeches by Vice Rector Professor Zbigniew Paszenda, PhD, DSc; Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics Professor Marcin Woźniak, PhD, DSc; and co-founder of the School, Professor Marek Kordos PhD, DSc. Traditionally, the first lecture was given by the winner of the Filc Medal – Professor Jarosław Grytczuk, PhD, DSc, for the best talk at the previous School.

This year’s best lecture was given by Professor Zbigniew Marciniak, PhD, DSc, Every student knows that there is no  formula for the integral of e-x2. Do they ever learn why? (,,Każdy student wie, że nie ma wzoru na całkę z e−x2. Czy do końca studiów dostaje odpowiedź dlaczego?’’).

On Saturday, a poster exhibition was held at the Silesian University of Technology Library, where conference participants presented their posters on this year’s conference theme and answered questions about them.
