Biographical Note:

Graduate of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Silesian University of Technology, specialisation: Building and Engineering Structures (1995). Appointed as an assistant in 1995 and directed to full-time doctoral studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Silesian University of Technology. Doctoral thesis entitled “Modelling the electrochemical realkalization process of concrete” was written under the supervision of Adam Zybura, PhD, DSc Professor of Silesian University of Technology and defended with distinction (2002). In 2002, he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Building Structures at the Silesian University of Technology. For his doctoral thesis he received the Distinction of the Minister of Infrastructure and the Individual 2nd degree Award of the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology (2003). In 2013 he opened a postdoctoral dissertation on “Modelling of the steel-concrete system in the measurement of reinforcement corrosion rate by impedance spectroscopy”. In 2014, after the postdoctoral colloquium, the Council of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology unanimously conferred on him the PhD degree in the discipline “civil engineering” in the specialisation “concrete structures”. For his habilitation thesis he received the Individual 2nd degree Award of the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology (2015). He was elected as Vice-Dean for Didactics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology for the term 2016-2020 and appointed as Vice-Dean for Education for the term 2020-2024. In 2019, he was appointed as the Rector's Representative for Student Affairs and for the period (2021-2024) as the coordinator of the “construction” field of study at the Silesian University of Technology. In 2022, he wrote a scientific monograph entitled “Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in the Diagnosis of Concrete and Steel Structures”, which was a summary of the research work carried out after his habilitation. In 2023, by a decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, at the request of the Council for Scientific Excellence, he was awarded the academic title of professor of engineering sciences in the discipline of civil engineering and transport.

Scientifically, he specialises in issues of durability of concrete and steel structures, carrying out works concerning electrochemical tests of corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete, effectiveness of inhibitor protection of reinforced concrete, coating protection of reinforcement and elements of metal structures, as well as electrochemical methods of regeneration of reinforced concrete. He has participated in 10 research projects of the State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MNiSW) and under the Operational Programme Innovative Economy, as well as in pre-implementation projects “Innovation Incubator+”. He is the author and co-author of over 120 national and international publications, including 2 scientific monographs and 3 textbooks published by PWN. He was the creator and Guest Editor of 2 special editions of the “Applied Sciences” journal, and has been invited to the Board of Reviewers of the journals “Applied Sciences” and “Metals” and the Subject Board of “Applied Sciences”. He has co-authored 5 patents and 4 patent applications on advanced diagnostics and corrosion monitoring of concrete and steel structures. He has been a reviewer of more than 120 articles, papers and research projects, collaborating with the National Centre for Research and Development and the National Science Centre, as well as with the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development. He was a member and secretary of 4 postdoctoral committees and a reviewer of 1 doctoral dissertation. He acted as promoter of 2 doctoral dissertations, including one completed with a public defence (2021).

Since 1995, he has taught 22 subjects (including 6 in English) in the areas of concrete structure design, urban construction, structural diagnostics, durability of structures and fundamentals of structural design. He has been the supervisor of nearly 100 master's theses, engineering theses and engineering projects, including 22 in English. Mainly in cooperation with Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians (PZITB), he has been conducting training courses for engineers in the field of widely understood durability of building structures for several years. He has also delivered 7 commissioned lectures. For his scientific, teaching and organisational activities he has received a total of 14 awards and distinctions, including the Prof. Brzozowski Award of the PZITB Gliwice Branch for supervising an engineering thesis (2008) and the prestigious Prof. Danilecki Award of the Committee on Durability of Structures of the Main Board of the PZITB for outstanding achievements in the field of durability and protection of structures against corrosion (2016).

He was a member of the PZITB Science Committee (2004), member of the Board of the Silesian Science Committee of PZITB (2009-2013), secretary of the Silesian Science Committee of PZITB (2013-2016) and secretary of the Committee on Durability of Buildings of Main Board of the PZITB for 2 terms (2008-2012, 2012-2016). He was also vice-president of the Silesian branch of the Association of Engineers and Technicians of the Building Materials Industry (2014-2015). Since 1995, he was an active member of 11 scientific committees and served as vice-chairman and secretary of 5 organising committees of scientific and technical conferences (national and international). For 1 term (2019-2022) he served as vice-chairman of the Building Engineering Committee of the Katowice Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, while for 2 terms (2016-2020) and (2020-2024) he was vice-chairman of the Building Durability Committee of the PZITB Main Board. Since 2016, for a second 4-year term, he has participated in the meetings of the Board of Education of the Silesian University of Technology, and since 2019 also for a second term in the meetings of the Board of the Discipline of Civil Engineering and Transport at the Silesian University of Technology. Since 2021, he has been a member of the District Qualification Committee of the Silesian District Chamber of Civil Engineers, examining engineers for building qualifications.

He has nearly 30 years of experience in the civil engineering profession and he has held a full construction licence to design and direct construction works without limitations in the structural and civil engineering specialisation for more than a dozen years (2005). In 2015, he established a sole proprietorship, where he provides highly specialised expert construction services. In 2017, he was awarded the title of building surveyor in the structural and civil engineering specialisation covering design in general and industrial construction as well as structural diagnostics and corrosion protection of structures. He is co-founder and, since 2020, president of the Silesian University of Technology spin-off company “CorrTEST Sp. z o.o.”, one of whose main objectives is the commercialisation of author's patents. He has developed more than 210 technical expertise and construction projects. He has co-authored numerous technical studies on corrosion risk assessment of responsible building structures, including thin-walled socket columns of the former polish national railway station building in Katowice (2009), pillars of an overpass in Zakopane (2009) and 45-metre-high reinforced concrete cement silos in Chorula (2012).
