CLIL and other projects

* On June 14, 2022, the final presentation of the 7th edition of the CLIL program took place, during which students demonstrated and discussed their projects of concrete decorative and utility objects. This presentation met with a very kind reception of the invited guests - the authorities of the Foreign Languages Centre (SJO), lecturers of English and numerous students. It is worth mentioning that in the audience who gathered to watch the presentation were also students who, as the first pandemic year, could not finish the practical aspect of the CLIL program in 2020.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering was represented by Ms Małgorzata Gołaszewska, PhD, who as a content teacher supported the lecturers of English: Ms Iwona Seta-Dąbrowska, MA, and Mr Janusz Sroka, MA, in the implementation of the program.

The CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) program is designed to combine learning a foreign language and subject content specific to a given faculty, and to prepare students to enter the job market by educating them in the so-called transferable skills. It is therefore worth remembering that the concrete decorative objects presented by the students are only a practical implementation of some of the taught content and as such are an added value of the CLIL program, not its main goal.

The unwavering interest of students, as well as the support of the authorities of the Foreign Languages Centre and the Faculty of Civil Engineering allow us to hope that the next academic year will bring another edition of our unique CLIL program.

* On May 11, 2022, in the Foreign Language Centre and on the Zoom platform, the Final Presentation of the project entitled "Engineering Challenges" was held. The project was conducted using the CLIL method (integrated teaching of the subject and language). During their final presentation students of the second year of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, majoring in Automation and Robotics of the Silesian University of Technology, presented the effects of their work on:

  • Electric drink dispenser
  • Drone model
  • A chain experiment

The project was conducted as part of the English language course from March 16 to May 11, 2022 (8 weeks) under the supervision of Ms Grażyna Duda, MA. The students also benefited from the advice of their subject teachers, Mr Piotr Przystałek, PhD Eng., Associate Professor at SUT, and Mr Wawrzyniec Panfil, PhD Eng., from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology.

The students worked in three teams of five, planning the next stages of building their devices, selecting materials for their implementation, programming and checking their operation, and introducing possible corrections. Each team prepared a final presentation of their device.

By adding thematic content, the CLIL method increases the motivation of students to learn a foreign language and at the same time gives them a chance to use their creativity in practicing and developing the so-called soft skills through working in teams, solving difficult problems and meeting deadlines. During the project, the students were required to submit weekly written reports on the progress of their work on their devices. Each team also prepared a final project report (Final Report).
