Telecollaborations
* On 10th June, 2023, at 12 p.m in Poland and 7 p.m. in Japan, a summary of an international telecollaboration project was held on the Zoom platform. The project was carried out in the summer semester 2022/23 in cooperation with 'Otaru University of Commerce' in Japan.
The project, as part of the English language course, was attended by Polish students of the 4th semester of the Faculty of Mechanical and Technology in the field of Mechatronics and Japanese students of mixed groups in the field of Commerce. The project coordinators were prof. Daniel Caluianu and Iwona Seta-Dąbrowska, MA.
The subject of the project was an adaptation of Polish solutions and products in the Japanese context. After analyzing a variety of concepts, the project groups decided to focus on two main areas:
1. Outdoor gyms
The students took care of adapting innovative outdoor gyms to Japanese weather conditions. Due to the high amount of rainfall, Japanese gyms would require special roofing to provide protection from the rain, and due to the limited space and high population density in Japan, the use of unusual locations, such as rooftops would be advisable.
2. Applications for mobile payments at gas stations.
Students designed an application for cashless payments at gas stations. This application would be innovative in the Japanese market, where such a service does not exist so far. Students adapted the application interface to the Japanese language, also taking into account elements characteristic of the Japanese culture and market.
This year's project was implemented in the summer semester, which was a challenge mainly due to the differences in the organization of the academic year between Poland and Japan. However, despite the difficulties encountered, we hope that the experience gained during this project will contribute to more fruitful cooperation in the future.

* On December 6th, 2022 the Final Presentation of the international telecollaboration project "The Mobile App" was held at the Foreign Languages Centre and on the ZOOM platform. The aim of the project was to design a prototype of an application for a mobile phone that would help maintain good physical condition along with an appropriate supporting diet, and to find a market for this kind of application.
The project was conducted as part of the English language course from October 11 to December 6, 2022. The participants of the project were second-year students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Silesian University of Technology under the supervision of Ms Grażyna Duda, MA, and students of the Budapest University of Economics under the supervision of Ms Ildiko Dosa, PhD. It was one more project carried out in cooperation with this Hungarian university.
The students worked together in four international teams, communicating on social platforms (Facebook, Discord) and by e-mail, through a specially created address on the Google search engine, and using Google Disc to send jointly developed documents.
The students performed engineering tasks and business tasks, sharing knowledge in the above-mentioned fields. Our students learned how to create a business plan and find buyers for the application they created, while the Hungarian students gained knowledge about the product for which they had to find a market, which made it much easier for them to create an appropriate marketing strategy.
The project was the next installment of international telecollaboration projects conducted using the PBL method at the Foreign Languages Centre. For the Final Presentation of the project, apart from the project supervisors, the students invited their colleagues from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics. Also present was Ms Małgorzata Rachwalska-Mitas, PhD, the Director of the Foreign Language Centre, and Ms Bożena Piątek, PhD Eng, Associate Professor at SUT, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics.
