The Geotechnical Laboratory deals with the determination of physical and mechanical parameters of natural and anthropogenic soils. It is equipped with the basic laboratory equipment for determination of:
- grain size distribution (shakers, sieve sets and hydrometers)
- compactibility parameters (Proctor apparatuses)
- water permeability of coarse-grained soils (ITB-ZW-KII apparatus)
- compressibility and swelling in uniaxial state of strain (oedometers, Vasiliev's apparatuses)
- shear strength with the forced surface of failure (direct shear apparatus)
- stiffness and shear strength in an axisymmetric state of stress (triaxial apparatus, benders for determining the initial stiffness modulus, local displacement transducers, stress path control)
- consistency limits (Casagrande apparatus and cone penetrometers)
- specific density (pycnometers)
- water content (dryers)
The laboratory is also able to conduct some in-situ tests using: a dynamic light probe, a hand-held drill with a set of drills, a whistle (determination of the depth of the groundwater table in a borehole), a VSS probe (determination of the stiffness modulus of the road substrate); displacement sensors with magnetic holders (e.g. estimation of settlement during trial loads on the ground or piles).
