Seminarium POB1: dr Jennifer Sargent

We would like to invite everybody to join the next POB1 e-seminar. We meet online on Wednesday, April 9th, 4:00 pm Warsaw time (link to the event below). Our guest speaker will be dr Jennifer Sargent, founder of Babelfisk, a company which offers strategic advice in areas spanning precision medicine to public and global health, in addition to promotion of diverse, equitable and inclusive research.  Jennifer has deep interests in reducing health disparities, both globally and within countries. She works with a range of clients including inter-governmental organisations and academic and philanthropic sectors. Dr Jennifer Sargent has a decade of editorial experience with high profile academic medical journals, including The Lancet and Nature Reviews Endocrinology and, most recently, was Deputy Editor at Nature Medicine, where she led a team of editors handling manuscripts in public health and clinical content covering cardiometabolic disease, nutrition, neurology, child health, women’s health and precision medicine. Dr Sargent completed her undergraduate and Honours studies in biochemistry at the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia) and earned her PhD in genetics from Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH, USA) prior to doing postdoctoral studies in immunology at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD, USA).

Wednesday's lecture topic: Maximising the impact of your research

Abstract: Researchers are often asked to demonstrate “impact” of their findings or proposed projects to the general public, funders and to policymakers. The most impactful clinical and public health research is not only quantified by publication and citations in academic journals but leads to actionable outcomes, often mediated through policy change. Thus, maximising impact requires strategic development of a research question from inception to publication. By ensuring that principles of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are appropriately considered in study design, research findings will be highly relevant the communities they are intended to benefit. This interactive workshop will cover considerations of DEI in developing research questions and study design, using precision medicine exemplars, as well as providing an overview of how to approach dissemination in academic journals to ensure that your research is most effectively communicated to the right audiences.
