Professor Jerzy Respondek's monograph

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Jerzy Respondek from the Faculty of Automation, Electronics, and Computer Science has published a monograph with the prestigious Springer publishing house. For over a decade, he has been passionately teaching database courses to our students.

The book focuses on the concept of Fast Matrix Multiplication, which was first introduced in 1968 and significantly developed in the 1980s. Until now, these methods have been presented in a highly compact and specialized form, comprehensible only to a narrow group of experts. As a result, this topic—before the publication of this book—was known by name among mathematicians and computer scientists but was rarely applied due to the high "entry barrier."

According to the author’s best knowledge, Prof. Respondek’s monograph is the first comprehensive study of the subject, making it accessible to specialists who may wish to apply it—not just theoretical mathematicians. Potential readers include computer scientists, physicists, engineers, econometrics specialists, production organization experts, and, perhaps most importantly, artificial intelligence (AI) researchers.

It is worth noting that modern processors, such as Intel Xeon (with AMX instruction sets) and ARM architectures, have built-in matrix multiplication algorithms, allowing them to perform these operations extremely fast. This raises the question: how can these processor-embedded mechanisms be leveraged for applications beyond standard matrix multiplication? This monograph addresses this challenge, presenting 34 possible applications, including:

  • AI – artificial intelligence is only as intelligent as the matrix multiplication algorithm it employs!
Finding optimal paths (e.g., in vehicle navigation)
Optimization (making the best possible decisions across various disciplines)
    Large databases
Computational biology and the synthesis of new drugs
