On Saturday, May 23, 2026, during the 2026 doctoral graduation ceremony, Professor Ewa Piętka received the title of Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology.

Professor Ewa Piętka, a graduate of the SUT's Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics, and Computer Science, was one of the founders of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and served as its first dean in 2011-2012. For 15 years, she headed the Department of Medical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence. She prepared the biomedical engineering curriculum for its launch at SUT in 2007. Professor Piętka has held numerous organizational roles at SUT, including serving as chair of the Biomedical Engineering Discipline Council and as a member of the Senate. She is the founder and long-time chair of the Program Committee of the international scientific conference Information Technology in Biomedicine (ITiB). She is a recognized scientist in the national community: she has served as an elected member of the Council of Scientific Excellence (two terms in total) and as deputy chair and member of the Committee on Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences. She spent six years early in her academic career conducting research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Geneva. She was also an employee at the Silesian Medical University in Katowice.

Professor Piętka has co-authored numerous publications, including articles in top-tier journals such as IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering, Pattern Recognition, Journal of Digital Imaging, and European Journal of Radiology. She has served as an editor for scientific journals, including Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics and Computers in Biology and Medicine, both published by Elsevier. She has supervised 15 PhDs, five of whom have received postdoctoral degrees, and two of whom have been promoted to professor. Professor Piętka is annually ranked among the top 2% of most influential researchers in the world based on their entire scientific career. Professor Piętka has led or participated in over a dozen national and international research projects, funded, e.g., by the National Science Centre, the National Centre for Research and Development, and the National Institute of Health (USA).

Professor Ewa Piętka is an outstanding scientist and academic teacher, and her scientific, teaching, and organizational achievements have had a significant impact on the University's development and on science in Poland. She is a mentor and source of inspiration to the scientific and teaching staff, and her work has, for years, built our University's reputation both nationally and internationally.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Piętka!
