Faculty of Chemistry

On May 18, 2023, when Students of the Silesian University of Technology celebrated Sports Day, we had the pleasure of hosting students from two Secondary Schools from our region

On Thursday, May 18, we were visited by 2 delegations from schools:

• II LO im. Stefana Batorego w Chorzowie
• TEB Edukacja, Liceum Ogólnokształcące w Gliwicach

Classes were held in 3 Departments of our Faculty.

Workshops conducted at the Department of Inorganic, Analytical Chemistry and Electrochemistry covered the practical application of redox reactions in electrochemical systems. The students had to prepare samples of aluminum alloys and magnesium alloys, prepare appropriate galvanic baths, and finally carry out the process of plasma electrolytic oxidation in order to produce protective coatings. The classes were conducted by dr inż. Maciej Sowa and mgr inż. Aleksander Olesinski.

Then it was time for the Department of Organic Technology and Petrochemistry. Here, the students had the opportunity to practice the production of cosmetics and "bathing" chemistry. For many of the workshop participants, it was the first contact with a real chemical laboratory. The class was supervised by mgr inż. Bartłomiej Gaida.

At the Department of Chemical Engineering and Process Design, guests had the opportunity to learn more about bioprocess engineering and mathematical modeling of various chemical processes. The students visited the studio of Prof. Lemanowicz, where prototypes of new chemical reactors are being prepared in 3D printing technology, and they got acquainted with modern engineering software, including simulations using numerical fluid mechanics. On the other hand, in the laboratory of Prof. Szymańska, they tried to immobilize yeast in sodium alginate and then determined their activity before and after immobilization.

Although our regular students had no classes on that day, we were very pleased to host young chemistry enthusiasts! See you!
