Abstract:
This study examines how controlled additions of Mg and Ca, combined with severe plastic deformation via KoBo extrusion, influence the microstructure, mechanical performance, and corrosion behavior of Zn-based materials. Microstructural characterization using SEM and EBSD confirmed that alloying promotes the formation of Mg₂Zn₁₁ and CaZn₁₃ intermetallic phases. Numerical simulation using FORGE® NxT enabled the estimation of the equivalent strain introduced during KoBo extrusion. The ternary Zn–1.7Mg–1Ca alloy demonstrated remarkable mechanical improvement compared to pure Zn, exhibiting a 186% increase in hardness, 210% higher yield strength, and a 254% rise in ultimate tensile strength. KoBo extrusion provided an additional strengthening effect for both materials. Electrochemical testing in Ringer’s solution showed that alloying increased the corrosion rate due to micro-galvanic interactions between phases, whereas KoBo extrusion had a dual role—accelerating corrosion in pure Zn but reducing it in the ternary alloy. Overall, the synergy between alloying and severe plastic deformation offers a promising pathway for tuning the mechanical and corrosion properties of Zn-based materials for advanced applications.
