On September 1, 2026, the BioFACTORy (Fully automated cell and tissue-engineered bioimplant production for orocraniofacial regeneration) project was officially launched - a four-year Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union, led by the University of Bergen (UiB). Its aim is to bring advanced cell-based regenerative therapies closer to widespread clinical application. Over the next 48 months, the project will seek to transform the complex and costly manufacturing processes of these therapies into more standardized, scalable, and cost-effective solutions, making them available to a larger number of patients with craniofacial bone defects.

Silesian University of Technology participates in the project as a consortium partner. The work carried out at the Silesian University of Technology is coordinated by Joanna Czajkowska, PhD, DSc, Eng., Professor at Silesian University of Technology.
This is the first project of this kind to be implemented at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering.

With a budget exceeding €8.1 million and 14 partners involved, the project is developing an artificial intelligence-based, automated platform for manufacturing tissue-engineered medicinal products derived from mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) for patients with craniofacial bone defects. By integrating advanced cell culture, laboratory automation, biofabrication, and quality control, BioFACTORy aims to develop more scalable, accessible, and cost-effective methods for producing bioimplants.
