Dr. Eng. Arch. Magdalena Wałek is the winner of the Il Centro di Excellenza DTC - Award 2024 competition for the best scientific works on cultural heritage.
On December 18, the awards ceremony for the best master's and doctoral theses on cultural heritage, awarded by the DTC Lazio Center of Excellence, took place in Rome. Among the awarded young scientists was Dr. Eng. Arch. Magdalena Wałek from the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology.
The ceremony took place in the Palazzo della Region Lazio in the Sala Tavere auditorium, and
the awards were presented by: Roberta Angelini (Vice President of Regione Lazio), Francesco Marcolini (President of Lazio Innova), Laura Tassinari (Direttore Internazionalizzazione, Cluster e Studi Lazioinnova), and Simone Bozzato (President of CdE DTC Lazio)

The doctoral dissertation of Dr. Eng. arch. Magdalena Wałek, is entitled: "Cultural landscape of the Jurassic Belt of defensive architecture – a digital model of representation in the process of heritage conservation and popularisation" and was prepared as part of an international inter-university agreement between the Silesian University of Technology and the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, concerning the implementation of a double doctorate. In accordance with the provisions of the agreement, Magdalena Wałek obtained two separate equivalent doctoral degrees awarded by individual universities: a doctor of technical sciences in the discipline of architecture and urban planning (Silesian University of Technology) and a doctor of humanities in the discipline of philosophy and literature (University of Cassino).
The work addresses an important and current topic of using modern digital tools for research and documentation of historical architecture. The subject of the research is the architectural heritage of medieval architecture on the example of defensive structures in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.
The thesis supervisors were: Professor Magdalena Żmudzińska-Nowak (Silesian University of Technology) and Professor Assunta Pelliccio (University of Cassino and Southern Lazio).
Praca porusza ważny i aktualny temat wykorzystania nowoczesnych narzędzi
cyfrowych do badań i dokumentacji architektury historycznej. Przedmiotem
badań jest dziedzictwo architektoniczne średniowiecznej architektury na
przykładzie obronnych budowli na terenie Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej.
Promotorami pracy były: profesor Magdalena Żmudzińska-Nowak (Politechnika Śląska) raz profesor Assunta Pelliccio z (University of Cassino and Southern Lazio).
