The Department of Urban Planning and Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology starts a series of scientific conferences under the name:
REGION - CITY - VILLAGE
The conferences will be interdisciplinary, and we invite representatives of various disciplines of science and practical activity: architecture and urban planning, spatial planning, sociology, economics, earth sciences, as well as officials, politicians, designers, planners and other people interested in the issues of shaping space.
LIVE IN THE CITY
is the title of the first conference at which we want to raise issues related to contemporary housing. Dynamic social and economic changes cause the emergence of many problems that broadly understood urban planning must recognize, predict their effects, try to indicate solutions - also in the field of creating space for an apartment. The most important ones include:
• changing the family model and household type,
• change of lifestyle,
• aging of the population,
• migrations,
• unclear housing policy of public authorities,
• limiting the available housing construction,
• poor control of public authorities over spatial development.
In Poland, according to many, we still have too few flats - at the same time, about seven percent of the flats remain uninhabited. Hundreds of new, luxurious housing estates are clearly visible, and at the same time over ten percent of flats do not meet basic standards (according to the 2011 Census). For many years there has been concern about the violent and chaotic suburbanization and urban sprawl, and at the same time cities do little to improve the quality of residential spaces in downtown. These and other paradoxes provoke questions about the reasons for this state of affairs and about proposed solutions to the problems noticed.

We are pleased to announce that the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology together with the Institute of Architecture and Town Planning WBAiIS of the Lodz University of Technology and KAiU PAN are organizing another ULAR conference - Urban Landscape Renewal, which will take place in Kroczyce in the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura on September 26 - 27, 2013. . The seventh edition of the conference is entitled THE FUTURE OF MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES.
