ZBIGNIEW GĄDEK
(information comes from Almanachu XXX Wydziału Architektury Politechniki Śląskiej)

Scientific title: PROF. DR HAB. INŻ. ARCH.
Years of work at W.A. Silesian University of Technology: FROM 1974 TO 1998
Position: EXTRAORDINARY PROFESSOR OF THE SILESIAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Date and place of birth: 1925
Date and place of death: 1998, KRAKÓW
Diploma: 1953, W.A. KRAKOW UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
PhD: 1965
Habilitation: 1972, W.A. KRAKOW UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Titular professor: 1997
Managerial functions at W. A. of the Silesian University of Technology: FROM 1974 TO 1998 - HEAD OF THE URBANISTS TEAM

Member of the Town Planning and Architecture Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences Branches in Kraków and Katowice. In the years 1953-1974 he taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology, at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, at the Hull School of Architecture, at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Sheffield - also in later years as a visiting critic. Frequent study trips to the USA and European countries. Numerous projects and realizations of buildings and urban assumptions; publications on architectural and urban theory and practice. Author's exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including: 14th International Art Biennale in Sao Paulo, TERRA-1, TERRA-2, Kingston upon Hull, Sheffield, Kraków, Opole, Zakopane. ■ A man of great heart and great creative passion, often called an unconventional architect, always generously sharing with everyone the joy of knowing, the joy of creating, love of freedom, nature and beauty in all its manifestations. His students and friends - associates, with whom he always shared his professional and life experience, drew from his enormous, extraordinary knowledge and innovative, ahead of the era creative searches. A great, restless spirit of architecture, extremely creative in every action. In his colorful and fully active life, he inspired and initiated many important artistic and professional activities, including publishing, in Poland and abroad. He suggested ideas, drew attention to people and events, willingly actively participating in them. In numerous publications, especially in the last one, The architecture of the place presented its drawn and written workshop and creative philosophy, revealing great erudition but also a clear creative personality. In the course of forty years of research and studies, the mainstream of his thoughts and design activities were the problems of the context of time and place and large-scale architecture in the urban, landscape and social aspect, as well as preventing the degradation of the human environment through the proper formation of architecture, often in futuristic terms. Knowledge and freedom of movement in the theories contemporary to him and, at the same time, consistent adherence to one's own opinion, strongly preferring the author's individualism, shown in specific design solutions, leave no doubt as to who their creator is. The magnificent drawings presented in the illustrative parts of the publications, juxtaposed with the photographs of the realizations, constitute for us albums of very personal works. In it, Zbigniew Gądek creates a world of his own, but at the same time very similar to his surroundings. A world that understands and continues - often futuristically - the processes of nature, and at the same time inscribed in the tradition and folklore of the place. The successes of the realization become a fact, because they create visions that are personal, but in an obvious and conflict-free way, as if they were all our ideas about the place where they were created. He presented his world of architecture and his struggles with it in his publications in an extremely true and unambiguous manner, showing the architect's fascinating workshop and his striving to make what has been drawn come true in space. And it is just as the author imagined it. He had an extraordinary gift of noticing and releasing people's creative possibilities. He appreciated the creative attitude to life and work, as well as honesty and unpretentiousness. His enormous vitality and sometimes coarseness concealed a soul extremely sensitive to beauty and good, pain or human dilemmas. He was unable to come to terms with the pettiness of this world, reacting impulsively and often effectively to all their manifestations, especially when it concerned the creation of space and architecture, as well as its teaching. He had a special attitude towards academic youth. He educated a number of great architects who were instilled with a love of the profession, a sense of beauty and aesthetics, enormous creative enthusiasm, and faith in man. The ease of reaching young minds resulted from his partner-like, friendly treatment, for which he was especially valued, respected and liked. Today, students who came from the master's hand contribute to the teaching staff of the Faculty of Architecture, passing on the acquired skills and principles to the next generations. He was passionate about architecture, passionately pursuing his beloved profession as both a designer and an academic teacher. And it was contagious! His relatives and friends, students and colleagues as well as critics such as T.P. Szafer, D. Gosling, P.G. Fauset, F.
