A renewed Venus has returned
The Faculty now has a renovated plaster cast of Venus, which is located in Room 101. A silicone mold was also made, enabling further casts to be made, as well as 2 copies, which will probably go to the newly built Student Creativity Center and the Rector's Office. The sculptures will be placed on specially made stands locating the head of Venus at human height. The renovation and creation of the mold was carried out by a professional studio from Cieszyn. The process lasted several months. This is a continuation of the action undertaken by the Dean to renew important material resources of the Faculty. Another plaster head was also restored, copies of which were temporarily hung on the staircase landing. Please note that the Venus de Milo statue is made of Parian marble (from the island of Paros). It is a sculpture by an anonymous creator from the Rhodian school from around 130–100 BC. Some researchers believe that the creator may have been Agesandros of Rhodes. The full figure stands on the Ip of the old building. So a glossy restoration brings it closer to the original. You should also remember to view the sculpture, preferably in overhead lighting imitating the sharp Mediterranean sun, creating appropriate shadows. This will make it possible to view the sculpture in conditions similar to those that its author might have had when creating it.
The process of renovating ancient or Renaissance plaster casts has sparked renewed interest in them and drawn attention to their timeless beauty, which is a good trend in the era of 3D printing and artificial intelligence. The project involving the renovation and making of molds is an element of a broader research project under my supervision, an international project combining the latest future technologies with classic artistic workshops. The project has attracted the interest of world-class artist Wojciech Siudmak, who will probably visit the Faculty in the new year for this purpose. I invite people who want to actively participate in this project. I also invite students to plaster casting workshops, which we will organize in 2024 in cooperation with the RAr4 department and conservation studios.
