Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

We would like to cordially invite you to the combined Scientific Seminar of the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Material Extraction, the Section of Geomechanics, Mine and Tunnel Engineering of the Mining Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences Division in Katowice and Priority Research Area 6: Climate and Environmental Protection, Sustainable Energy.

The seminar (online) on the 14th of May (Wednesday) at 1:00 pm will be given by Dr. Krzysztof Tomiczek.

Seminar title: Natural disasters and environmental protection. Selected aspects.

Summary: The seminar will present an interdisciplinary analysis of selected aspects related to the occurrence of natural disasters and their impact on the natural environment, society and economy. Mechanisms of phenomena such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, hurricanes, typhoons, extreme rainfall, droughts, fires and volcanic eruptions will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to the impact of these disasters in Southeast Asian countries, a region with high exposure and vulnerability to natural hazards.

The seminar will present figures, statistical analyses, as well as maps and charts illustrating the scale and scope of the phenomena under discussion; selected data from institutions such as the UNDRR, IPCC, FAO, WHO and the World Bank will be presented.

Preventive and adaptive measures and international strategies, such as the Sendai Framework (Agenda 2030), will also be indicated.

Conclusions and recommendations for environmental policy and sustainable development will be proposed.
