Research work
The research activity of the Department focuses on two areas: the application of artificial intelligence methods, in particular in industrial IT systems, and the application of the electromagnetic field in heating and induction melting of metals and in metallurgical magnetohydrodynamics. The department specializes in the construction of Intelligent Expert Systems, i.e. IT systems with built-in artificial intelligence modules. These systems can work as: decision support, advisory, technological process control, monitoring, quality control or supervising the operation of the device or the course of the process. In this regard, the following were built and developed: Intelligent Expert System to control the steelmaking process in the conditions of FERROSTAL ŁABĘDY, Expert System for the assessment of environmental, economic and social performance of hard coal mines in Poland, Quality Control System on the car assembly line, Fiat Auto Poland, system for assessing reliability and predicting failure of medium voltage inverter, Continuous Prediction System of steel temperature and carbon content in a steel bath in an electric arc furnace, Scrap Classification System for melting in an electric arc furnace with the use of computer image analysis.

In the field of research on new technologies, the following were developed: technology and methodology of computer-aided induction hardening of contour hardening of steel elements with complex shapes, inside hardening technology of pipes for pneumatic and hydraulic transport using gas and induction heating, a new type of construction of through-flow induction heaters used in metal forming processes, technology for calibrating the ends of drilling and line pipes from the outside using medium-frequency induction heating, a stand for hardening pilgrim mandrels and calibrating hot tube ends. Currently, the research activity of the Department focuses on industrial applications of 3D scanning methods and the development of a new design of a device for revealing fingerprints.
