Research in the field of nuclear energy conducted at the Silesian University of Technology focuses on several areas related to this energy technology. Scientists deal with, among others, modeling of thermal and flow processes occurring in nuclear reactor systems (both in the primary and secondary cooling circuits). For this purpose, we use our own mathematical models and computer codes developed on their basis, as well as available specialized software, including CFD. Some of these analyzes are carried out with a view to assessing the operational safety of the nuclear reactor and the entire nuclear power plant. Systemic works are also carried out, whether in the field of assessing the energy efficiency of nuclear systems or the possibility of using nuclear technologies to decarbonise the national economy, as well as works aimed at assessing the overall environmental impact (thermo-ecological cost).

Analyzes are also carried out on nuclear fuel cycles, in particular in the field of heat generation at various stages of these cycles, heat removal problems, as well as analyzes to assess the amount of various types of radioactive waste generated in the fuel cycle.

University employees also conduct research on construction materials used in nuclear power (especially concrete). In this regard, the effects of the impact of environmental factors (e.g. sea water) on the structure and properties of these materials are assessed. In the field of mechanics of building structures, research is carried out to assess the impact of loads (mechanical, thermal) on the behavior of key structures of the nuclear power plant, e.g. the reactor containment.

All activities in this area are part of the nuclear energy program in Poland, they serve the development of human resources and building competence in this area.
