The choice of studies is not an easy matter … you are probably wondering how to combine your interests with job market forecasts and university offers. We will give you a hint!

Step by step instruction

First, think about what you like. Point out your interests – subjects at school that you like and in which you feel good, your passions and hobbies. It’s your life and your choice – don’t try to meet your parents’ or family’s expectations. Also ask your friends what, where they studied and whether they were satisfied.

Then, browse the university’s offers – what courses they offer, how they fare in the rankings. When choosing, be guided by reputation, tradition and experience.

Another basic question is: what field of study to choose to have a job in a few years? Now, a certain trend seems to be, for example, computer science, but remember that the field of study alone will not guarantee you professional success.

An increasingly popular solution is to combine theory with practice – already during studies. Universities introduce e.g., extensive apprenticeship programs or even dual studies, during which you spend half of your time on classes at the university, and the other half – in a specific company, where you earn extra money!

The comfort of studying is also extremely important – find out what the campuses look like, what infrastructure universities have, what laboratories they have.

It is obvious that learning itself is only part of student life. It is important to be able to develop your various passions and interests at the university. This happens, among others, thanks to student organizations, sports centres, theatres, choirs and student bands.

Student Science Clubs – this is also a very important aspect of studying. This is where you will develop your scientific interests in line with research of exceptional academic teachers.

In modern times, knowledge of foreign languages is extremely important, but also the opportunity to gain experience abroad. Therefore, check what offers of foreign study programmes and international exchanges are offered by the universities that interest you.

Read also about social support, scholarships and awards for academic achievements as well as artistic and sports achievements.
These are probably the basic hints that will help you choose your studies well.

The Silesian University of Technology is a reputable brand.

It is the oldest technical university in the Silesian Region, which was established as a response to the staffing needs during the development of the mining industry. Now – as one of ten research universities in Poland – it educates engineers of the future who specialize in innovative technologies. The Silesian University of Technology has its main campus in Gliwice – a city well connected in terms of all means of transport. You can study with us in Gliwice, Katowice, Zabrze and Rybnik. Gliwice itself is a city with a rich history and a leader in terms of companies in the modern technology industry.

Combining science with practice – we are experts in this!

It was at the Silesian University of Technology that the first dual studies in Poland were created, which – half and half – combine learning theory at the university with practice in specific industrial companies.

Graduates of these faculties are in demand on the labour market, because after graduation they already have several years of extremely valuable experience behind them.

I will remember my studies as one of the best times in my life. Throughout this time, I was active in the Student Council, which I highly recommend to everyone, due to the possibility of acquiring a wide range of soft skills, or as a perfect complement to the technical knowledge acquired during the classes. Undoubtedly, the greatest advantage of the activity in this organization was the opportunity to meet a wide group of fantastic people, both from the Silesian University of Technology, as well as from other universities in the country. I keep repeating that on the one hand, being in the local government is a lot of challenges and hard work, but on the other hand, it is primarily an opportunity to have fun with a group of friends and acquaintances. Besides, in my opinion, there is no worse way to waste study time than "just going to classes" without engaging in additional activities available at the University, such as research clubs, foreign exchanges or student organizations. Active use of study time enables an excellent start in a professional career, which I can confirm with my example, because finding a job in the profession right after graduation was not a problem. However, the possibilities do not end there. A good example is the implementation doctorate program, which I started this year, which allows, on the one hand, to gain professional experience, and on the other hand, to expand my knowledge and obtain another academic title. I recommend this program especially to those who appreciate the practical application of science, in this case through the implementation of a project aimed at implementing the title in a selected branch of the economy.

I come from the Opolskie Voivodeship, where the Silesian University of Technology enjoys a very good opinion. In the high school graduation class, I did not think long to participate in the open days of our University. The richly equipped laboratories and the atmosphere in the student community made a great impression on me. During my studies, academic teachers from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering infected me with a passion for material engineering that I studied. Studying at university has become a pleasure, not an unpleasant duty. Thanks to my commitment and help from lecturers, I participated in conferences and was a co-author of scientific articles. I completed my studies at the Silesian University of Technology receiving the Omnium Studiosorum Optimo medal for the best graduates with the Rector's award of the 1st degree. Currently, I am a PhD student at the Joint Doctoral School, thanks to which I can continue to develop my research interests. I am glad that I am part of the Silesian University of Technology - maybe you will join it as well?
