1.10.1971	Establishment of the Institute of Metallurgy and the Institute of Materials Engineering by merging the Cathedral of Raw Material Metallurgy with part of the Cathedral of Steel, Alloys and Plastic Processing (Director of the Institute: prof. dr inż. Stanisław Tochowicz). Two teams functioned within the Institute: the Iron Metallurgy Team (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Leszek Król) and the Steel and Alloy Metallurgy Team (Head: doc. dr hab. inż. Zygmunt Klisiewicz). Establishment of the Institute of Materials Engineering by merging the Cathedral of Materials Science and Technology with part of the Cathedral of Steel, Alloys and Plastic Processing (Director: prof. dr hab. inż. Adam Gierek). Four teams functioned within the Institute: the Materials Science and Metal Physics Team (Director: prof. dr hab. inż. 16.10.1971	Establishment of the Department of Ceramic Industry Machinery and Equipment and the Department of Non-ferrous Metallurgy within the Institute of Metallurgy (Department heads: Associate Professor Czesław Mazanek in 1971-1974, Dr. Izabella Firla in 1974-1975, and Professor Adam Leśniak in 1975-1977).
13.3.1972	Establishment of an Environmental Laboratory of Materials Engineering with headquarters at the Scientific and Didactic Center in Katowice (Head: dr inż. Henryk Woźnica)
11.10.1973	Transfer of the Department of Ceramic Industry Machinery and Equipment from the Metallurgical Department to the Department of Power Engineering Mechanics
24.11.1973	Transfer of the Institute of Transport and Communications from the Department of Energy Mechanics to the Department of Metallurgy

1.3.1976	The following laboratories were established at the Institute of Materials Engineering: Special Alloys and Powder Metallurgy (Head: dr inż. Jerzy Gierek), Foundry and Surface Treatment (Head: dr inż. Lech Bajka), Ceramic Plastics and Composites (Head: Janusz Gajda), Heat and Thermal-Chemical Treatment (Head: dr inż. Henryk Woźnica), Rolling and Fundamentals of Metal Forming (Head: dr inż. Andrzej Sobański), Forging, Drawing and Stamping (Head: dr inż. Franciszek Grosman), Metallography (Head: dr inż. Marek Hetmańczyk), Structural Research (Head: dr inż. Barbara Rauszer), Physicochemical Research (Head: mgr Michał Żelechower), Strength Research (Head: mgr inż. Wiesław Chladek)
4.6.1976	By the decision of the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technology abolished, in the Silesian University of Technology, the Environmental Laboratory of Materials Engineering
23.8.1977	The Institute of Non-ferrous Metals was established in place of the Department of Non-ferrous Metals (Director: doc. dr inż. Stanisław Wolff). The Department of Machinery and Equipment of the Ceramic Industry in the Institute of Fuel Energy was liquidated and the Institute of Machinery and Equipment of the Metallurgical and Ceramic Industry was established in Dąbrowa Górnicza
10.10.1977	The following laboratories were established at the Institute of Metallurgy: Ferrous Metallurgy (Head: dr inż. Jan Buzek), Combustion and Heat Recovery (Head: dr inż. Roman Wessely), Electromagnetic Displacement of Liquid Metals (Head: dr inż. Czesław Sajdak), Oxygen Metallurgical Processes (Head: dr inż. Karol Piotrowski), Ferroalloys (Head: mgr inż. Andrzej Szydło), Metallurgical Electric Heating (Head: mgr inż. Tadeusz Widera), Electrometallurgy (Head: dr inż. Zdzisław Lipiarz), Nonmetallic Inclusions (Head: dr inż. Maria Szulc), Metallurgical Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Head: mgr inż. Zofia Gorczyńska), Measurement Equipment and Apparatus (Head: mgr inż. Władysław Polechoński)
10.10.1977	In the Institute of Non-ferrous Metals, the following laboratories were established: Fundamentals of Metallurgical Processes and Hydrometallurgy (Head: dr Bogdan Sikora), Pyrometallurgical Processes and Secondary Raw Materials (Head: dr inż. Stanisław Turek), Testing and Measurement Technology (Head: mgr inż. Barbara Mill)
22.2.1980	Transformation of the Institute of Materials Engineering into the University-Industrial Center Institute of Materials Engineering.
1.10.1980	At the Institute of Metallurgy, departments were established in place of existing laboratories: Steel Metallurgy (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Zygmunt Klisiewicz), Iron Metallurgy (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Leszek Król), Electrotherm (Head: doc. dr inż. Zbigniew Majewski)
1.10.1981	At the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (Director: prof. dr hab. inż. Adolf Maciejny), departments were established in place of existing laboratories: Materials Science (Director: prof. dr hab. inż. Adolf Maciejny), Mechanics of Materials (Director: prof. dr hab. inż. Tadeusz Lamber), Plastic Processing (Director: doc. dr hab. inż. Franciszek Grosman), Foundry Engineering (Director: doc. dr hab. inż. Eugeniusz Krzemień), Special Alloys and Protective Layers (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Adam Gierek), Ceramics (Head: prof. dr inż. Stanisław Pawłowski), Composites and Plastics (Head: doc. dr inż. 16.12.1981	The University-Industrial Center was abolished, and the Institute of Materials Engineering was given the status of an internal research and teaching unit of the Faculty of Metallurgy of the Silesian University of Technology again.
1.10.1984	The Department of Production Organization is abolished, and the Cathedral of Production Organization is created in its place.
1.10.1988	The Faculty of Metallurgy is transformed into the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, with four institutes: metallurgy, non-ferrous metals, materials engineering, and energy and metallurgical equipment
1.10.1992	From the merger of the Cathedral of Management and the Social Science Center, the Institute of Organization and Business Management located in the Faculty of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering is formed. After the incorporation of the Institute of Transportation and the Social Science Center, the Department changes its name to the Faculty of Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Transportation and Management.
13.11.1992	In the organizational structure of the Institute of Organization and Management of Enterprise, the following departments are established: Research and Labor Protection (Head: dr hab. Bolesław Karłaszewski, prof. PŚ.), Economics (Head: prof. dr hab. Leszek Borcz), Philosophy and Sociology (Head: dr Wacław Pluskiewicz), Enterprise Management (Head: dr hab. inż. Józef Bendkowski, prof. PŚ)
14.4.1993	In the Institute of Transportation, the Department of Rail Transportation was abolished and replaced by the Department of Transportation Systems and the Department of Automation in Transportation, with the latter incorporating an electronics laboratory - ETO
1.9.1995	After the detachment of the Institute of Business Organization and Management, the Department changes its name to the Department of Materials, Metallurgy and Transport Engineering
9.1.1998	Establishment of a Center for New Technologies and Industrial Restructuring
1.9.2002	After the detachment of the Institute of Transport, the Department changes its name to the Department of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy
1.10.2003	In the Cathedral of Metallurgy, the Department of Metallurgical Process Fundamentals was abolished. The Cathedral of Mechanics and Metal Forming Technology changed its name to the Cathedral of Process Modeling and Medical Engineering. Two new departments were established in the Cathedral of Medical Engineering Process Modeling: Process and Production Systems Modeling and Medical Engineering. The Center for Graduate Studies, New Technologies and Industrial Restructuring was renamed the Faculty Center for Graduate Studies. Two new cathedrals were created: the Mechanics of Materials and Technological Process Management, with the division into two departments: Technology and Environmental Management and Integrated Systems Management.
1.10.2005	In the Cathedral of Metal Alloys and Composites Technology, the following departments were established: Corrosion and Immersion Metallurgy(Headed by dr hab. inż. Piotr Liberski, prof. PŚ), Tribology and Foundry Alloy Technology (Headed by prof. dr hab. inż. Franciszek Binczyk)
1.9.2006	In the Cathedral of Materials Science, the following departments were established: Metallic Materials (Head: dr hab. inż. Grzegorz Niewielski, prof. PŚ), Materials Research (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Jan Cwajna)
1.1.2008	An internal auxiliary unit called the ETO Laboratory was abolished
1.9.2009	In the Cathedral of Metallurgy, the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy and the Department of Non-ferrous Metallurgy were abolished. The Cathedral of Process Modeling and Medical Engineering, the Cathedral of Electrical Engineering with its internal organizational structure, the Cathedral of Process Power Engineering, the Cathedral of Mechanics of Materials, the Cathedral of Alloy and Composite Technology, and the Cathedral of Technological Process Management with its internal organizational structure were abolished. In their place, the following cathedrals were established: Materials Technology (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Józef Śleziona), Management and Computer Science (Head: dr hab. Tadeusz Wieczorek, prof. PŚ)
1.9.2013	The Cathedral of Metallurgy and the Cathedral of Materials Technology were transformed into the Institute of Metal Technology (Director: prof. dr hab. inż. Eugeniusz Hadasik), in which two departments were established: Extractive Metallurgy and Foundry (Director: dr hab. inż. Mariola Saternus), Mechanics and Plastic Processing (Director: dr hab. inż. Marek Cieśla, prof. PŚ). The Cathedral of Materials Science was transformed into the Institute of Materials Science (Director: dr hab. inż. Grzegorz Niewielski, prof. PŚ.) along with the departments: Ceramics and Composites (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Małgorzata Sopicka –Lizer), Heat and Surface Treatment (Head: dr hab. inż. Lucjan Swadźba, prof. PŚ), Materialography (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Jan Cwajna), Engineering Materials (Head: dr hab. inż. Andrzej Kiełbus, prof. PŚ). The Cathedral of Management and Computer Science was transformed into the following departments: Production Engineering (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Teresa Lis), Industrial Computer Science (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Tadeusz Wieczorek)
1.9.2017	The Institute of Metal Technology was transformed into the Cathedral of Extractive Metallurgy and Environmental Protection (Director: dr hab. inż. Jerzy Łabaj, prof. PŚ). The Institute of Materials Science was transformed into the Institute of Materials Engineering (Director: dr hab. inż. Dariusz Kuc, prof. PŚ.), along with the departments: Ceramics, Composites and Foundry Technologies (Director: dr hab. inż. Grzegorz Moskal, prof. PŚ), Surface Engineering and Plastic Processing (Director: dr hab. inż. Bogusław Mendala, prof. PŚ), Research and Mechanics of Materials (Director: dr hab. inż. Andrzej Kiełbus, prof. PŚ).
1.9.2019	The Department changes its name to the Department of Materials Engineering, and four cathedrals were created in the organizational structure: Advanced Materials and Technologies (Head: dr hab. inż. Bogusław Mendala, prof. PŚ), Metallurgy and Recycling (Head: dr hab. inż. Mariola Saternus, prof. PŚ), Industrial Informatics (Head: prof. dr hab. inż. Tadeusz Wieczorek), Production Engineering (Head: dr hab. inż. Krzysztof Nowacki, prof. PŚ).
