CoolHeatDC Kick-off Meeting at AIT in Vienna: Launching Innovation for Sustainable Data Centers
🚀 On December 11–12, 2025, the official launch of the CoolHeatDC research project took place at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna. This international initiative marks a significant step forward in the development of cutting-edge, climate-friendly technologies for data center cooling and heat recovery.
🌐 The project brings together leading organizations from Austria, Norway, and Poland — including SINTEF Energy Research, Silesian University of Technology (Department of Thermal Technology), Schneider Electric Norge AS, Green Mountain AS, and Advanced Technology Machines Sp. z o.o., under the scientific coordination of Teresa Schubert (AIT).
🔍 CoolHeatDC aims to design and validate an innovative two-phase immersion cooling system, operated with natural working fluids and directly coupled with a heat pump. This pioneering technology addresses key challenges in modern data centers by:
-Supporting high-performance computing and AI applications through efficient, direct liquid cooling
-Significantly reducing energy consumption compared to conventional systems
-Recovering excess heat for use in low-temperature district heating and industrial processes
-Contributing to the broader goals of energy efficiency and climate neutrality in the digital age
📊 With European data centers already consuming approximately 100 TWh of electricity in 2022 — projected to rise to 150 TWh by 2030 — this project offers a timely and scalable solution to reduce the environmental impact of digital infrastructure.
🤝 The CoolHeatDC consortium will collaborate over the next three years to set new standards for sustainable data center operations. The project is co-funded by the European Commission (CETPartnership, Grant Agreement No. 101069750), Bundesministerium für Innovation, Mobilität und Infrastruktur, NCBR Poland, and the Research Council of Norway.
🧩 A successful Day 1 of the kick-off meeting sets the tone for the work ahead — advancing sustainability, innovation, and European leadership in green digital technologies.
