Department of Biomaterials and Medical Device Engineering

We offer the possibility to carry out material tests in the scope of assessing medical devices, verifying designs of newly developed medical devices (design inputs/outputs), validating processes of manufacturing medical devices and their certification. A detailed description of the available equipment can be found in the Laboratories tab. We encourage direct contact with laboratory coordinators.

  • Tests on metallic biomaterials with modified structure and defined mechanical properties with surface layers for implants for tissue reconstruction and flexible anastomosis
  • Tests on the mechanical properties of biomaterials and biomechanical constructions under static and dynamic loads
  • Studies on a new generation of shape memory implants for the stabilization of bone and soft tissue fractures, bone distractors and for modelling of craniofacial and spinal deformations using the superelasticity effect
  • Analysis and modelling of biomaterial surface porosity
  • Blasting, roughing and fine finishing on corundum and silica aggregates
  • Tests on corrosion resistance of metallic biomaterials or degradation of polymeric and composite biomaterials, biologically active materials under in vitro conditions
  • Examination of the resistance of biomaterials and implants to pitting, crevice, stress and fatigue corrosion, taking into account biomechanical considerations and surgical technique
  • Durability tests of implantable devices subjected to environmental exposure to tissues and physiological fluids, including biomechanical factors
  • Precision heat treatment, calcination in furnaces with an operating temperature of up to 1650°C
  • Testing of ceramic biomaterials (inert, bioactive glasses and glass-ceramic materials, tissue-resorbable materials, bone and dental cements)
  • Application of ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition), sol-gel and electrophoresis techniques for surface modification of biomaterials
  • Manufacture of hybrid polymer – ceramics layers
  • Quantitative tests of biomaterials surface quality
  • Research on a new generation of surface layers (passive, passive-carbon, ceramic and polymer) produced on metal biomaterials
