Profile of a graduate of the first degree in specialty
Underground construction and surface protection

Conducting underground operation of deposits requires the execution and maintenance (often over a long period) of many made available and preparatory excavations. Mining technologies are also increasingly used in underground facilities, especially in areas with rich infrastructure. Studies in underground construction and surface protection have a wide profile and prepare specialists with extensive theoretical knowledge, appropriate practical knowledge, and high qualifications, especially in the following fields:

- geomechanics and mining geotechnology,

- underground and open-cast exploitation of useful mineral deposits,

- design and construction of underground mining facilities,

- the design and construction of underground structures for public utility purposes,

- forecasting and minimising the impact of mining operations on the mining site and the surface of the site,

- protection of underground and surface-located facilities from the impact of mining operations,

- protection of the natural and underground mining environment from the influence of underground exploitation,

- modernisation and reconstruction of existing mines and decommissioning of mines after depletion of the deposits,

- drilling for recognition of deposits, geological engineering conditions, and mining rescue.

A graduate of the first degree of this specialty has the basis for obtaining the required qualifications and is prepared for professional work in the field of:

  • solving interdisciplinary problems in terms of mining and geology, with particular regard to issues related to the design, construction and maintenance of corridors, chambers and its connection excavations, and the protection of surfaces in mining areas,
  • performing appropriate functions in positions of all levels of supervision of underground and open-cast mining plants in the departments related to the conduct of mining works,
  • doing jobs related to the use of mining techniques and technologies in civil engineering companies,
  • appropriate functions in environmental administrations in mining areas

The graduates of the first degree also meet the requirements to undertake a second degree (master's degree) studies in mining and geology.
