Profile of a graduate of the second degree in specialty
Underground construction and surface protection

Graduates of second-level studies in the Underground Construction and Surface Protection, trained in mining and geology, have a thorough and orderly knowledge of issues related to the design and operation of deposits, underground structures (mining excavations, tunnels, underground infrastructure facilities of cities, special geotechnical structures) and surface protection. As part of their second degree, UCSP graduates receive, among others, education in:

- the use of state-of-the-art methods and tools to solve specialized problems in the field of geomechanics, underground construction, and surface protection,

- modelling of geotechnical and technological processes for underground mining, underground construction and surface protection,

- selection and design of the housing of underground structures, including those localized

- under complex geological and mining conditions,

- diagnostics and methods of assessing the technical condition of the housing structure of underground structures,

- forecasting the impact of mining operations on the surface and facilities located on the surface, taking into account continuous and discontinuous deformations and mining shocks,

- the design of underground exploitation of the deposits under conditions of minimisation of its effects on the rock-mass and surface and under conditions of natural hazards,

- the design and construction of mines, their expansion, restoration, and modernisation,

- undertaking and carrying out scientific work as well as research and development work on the above-mentioned issues.

A graduate of UCSP specialties is prepared to perform managerial functions in the mining division, in particular in mining works departments, production preparation department, surface protection cells in underground and surface mining plants. Besides, UCSP graduates can find employment in specialized service enterprises (mining companies, well construction, underground construction) working for mining and public administration. Graduates with appropriate traineeships and certifications may also work in the mining supervisory authorities and apply for the necessary powers to perform all functions related to the design and execution of mining works.
