1st International Student Symposium on the application of geomatics to natural disaster problems
On Friday, the 20th of September 2024, from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., a distance-based “1st International Student Symposium on Selected Problems of Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction. Cambodia - Malaysia - Philippines, 2024” (ISSSPGeoDRR) was held on the zoom.us platform.
The Symposium was one of the additional activities undertaken as part of the Silesian University of Technology's implementation of the international Erasmus PLUS Capacity Building Project “Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction” (GeoDRR). Silesian University of Technology is the Leader of this Project. The GeoDRR Project is implemented by a Consortium of 10 Partners: Silesian University of Technology, 6 universities from Southeast Asia. (Xavier University, Philippines, University of the Cordilleras, Philippines, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia, National University of Battambang, Cambodia, Svay Rieng University, Cambodia), 2 European universities (University of Alicante, Spain, University of West Attica, Greece) and a consulting-IT company (Novel Group S.à.r.l., Luxembourg).
The Project has been implemented since 2020 and is conducted at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation in the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Material Extraction (RG4). Its Coordinator, since 2022, is Dr. Krzysztof Tomiczek, Eng.
The objective of this project is to launch 2nd level GeoDRR studies, in 6 Asian universities, including: building study programs corresponding to the European ECTS system and regional requirements, equipping laboratories, developing a knowledge base for lecturers, including training courses and a virtual teaching platform.
The ISSSPGeoDRR 2024 Symposium is a certain complement to the GeoDRR Student Conference, which was held in February 2024 and showed the high level of content and visual level of the work of students from 4 countries.
During the Symposium, 14 papers, authored by 53 students from Asia, were finally presented.
The Symposium had the honor of being under the honorary patronage of the JM Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk. The Scientific and Advisory Committee, in addition to the Project coordinator Dr. Krzysztof Tomiczek, included vice-rectors, deans, professors and Project Managers from across the Consortium.
The Symposium lectures, like those of the earlier conference, were at a very good level of content and presentation. Topics included, among others, geomechanics, geotechnics, geography, seismology, hydrology, numerical modeling, image analysis, geophysics, management and information systems.
The idea of the initiators was and is to build a tradition and scientific integration of the institutions participating in the GeoDRR Project, in the field of natural disaster problems. The positive involvement, participation and quality of the presentations give hope for the continuation of these meetings in future years.
