Visit to the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Materials Extraction (RG3) by a delegation from Melaka University of Technology, Malaysia

October 13., 2023. Silesian University of Technology was visited by a delegation from the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Malaysia (UTeM).

It was the result of cooperation with Malaysian universities that has been gradually developing as a result of the implemented Erasmus E+ Project 'Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction' (GeoDRR).

The delegation was headed by UTeM Vice-Chancellor H.E. Prof. Dat. Ts. Dr. Massila Binti Kamalrudin and Director of the UTeM Centre for Research and Innovation Prof. Ts. Dr. Noreffendy Bin Tamaldin.

Silesian University of Technology is the Leader of the GeoDRR Project. The Project is hosted in the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Materials Extraction (DoGaRME, RG4) and involves staff from DoGaRME and the Department of Safety Engineering (DoSE, RG3) of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation (RG).

The most important part of the visit was a meeting with the Rector's Authorities of the Silesian University of Technology, chaired by the Vice-Rector of the Silesian University of Technology for Science and Development, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk, DSc. The intensive working meeting started at 15:00 and lasted until the early evening hours. This meeting was immediately preceded by a tour and visit of the Guests to the campus of the Silesian University of Technology. More information about the proceedings of this meeting will appear in the media of the Silesian University of Technology.

However, the Guests' visit started much earlier, already at 11:30 a.m., in the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Materials Extraction. Presentations, conversations and discussions continued until 15:00, interspersed with a coffee break, a joint lunch and free time for the Guests reserved by them for prayer.

This part of the visit was focused on previous cooperation activities with Malaysian universities. Particular focus was on the topics of the implemented GeoDRR Project, with USM MY and UUM MY, and the, completed and implemented, 2 PBL projects. The meeting was attended by Krzysztof Tomiczek, PhD (RG4, main Project Coordinator and lecturer in the GeoDRR Project, main scientific supervisor of the PBL projects), Anna Bluszcz, DSc and Katarzyna Tobór-Osadnik, DSc (RG3, lecturers in the GeoDRR Project and supervisors in one of the PBL projects).

The knowledgeable discussions focused on issues related to natural disasters in Malaysia, geotechnical and geomechanical aspects of these phenomena and seismicity problems. Potential possibilities for finding topics for cooperative work and research were also discussed initially.

Respecting cultural aspects, a place of prayer was offered to the Guests.

The culinary hits were Polish chocolate sweets, which have been the most famous and recognised brands in Poland for decades.

The meetings proceeded in a good and positive spirit.
