During the lecture, you will learn about three generations of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) used in modern automotive structures—from body-in-white components, through the chassis, to closures. Their manufacturing processes, microstructure, structural design, and mechanical behavior under operating conditions will be discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the TRIP (TRansformation Induced Plasticity) effect resulting from the deformation-induced martensitic transformation of residual austenite. An important part of the lecture will be TRIP-aided multiphase steels, high-manganese and medium-Mn steels, as well as the latest trends in the design of electric vehicle structures, the use of “green steel” and hot-stamped components. There will be examples where materials engineering meets mechanical engineering.

👨‍🔬 About the speaker:

Prof. Adam Grajcar, PhD, Eng., is a member of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology and a specialist in the field of advanced steels and materials engineering. He conducts research on modern iron alloys for automotive applications, combining the perspectives of materials science and mechanical engineering. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and ranks among the top 2% of most cited scientists in the world.
