The development of artificial intelligence methods would not be possible without the work aimed at developing new tools and methods that improve the currently existing solutions. It is achieved by the basic research on machine learning methods, which lead to great success in many applications, including image recognition, natural language processing, predictive maintenance, and social network analysis. Researchers also improve in understanding the knowledge extracted from the learning systems. This is due to the work on knowledge engineering and the development of new concepts of its representation, especially in a human-understandable way. Artificial intelligence methods are largely inspired by the observations of various organisms and natural processes. This is how artificial neural networks and many optimization methods were created and developed, such as genetic and evolutionary algorithms, or particle swarm optimization methods.
