Cooperaition with TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (Turkey)
Scientists from the Silesian University of Technology will work on identifying substances that can be an alternative to antibiotics. The international project MarBaccines, co-led by the researchers from SUT, received funding under the 4th NCBiR Competition for joint Polish-Turkish research projects.
The MarBaccines project concerns the search, identification and characterization of natural compounds (i.e. bacteriocins) produced by bacteria inhabiting the marine environment (Sea of Marmara) and exhibiting bactericidal activity. Thanks to their unique properties, they can become an alternative to antibiotics. They are safer for the environment, and their use will not contribute to the development of drug resistance among bacteria.
On behalf of the Silesian University of Technology, the project is supervised by scientists from the Biotechnology Center - a member of the Tunneling Group, Dr. Hab. Artur Góra, employees of the Department of Environmental Biotechnology, Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering under the supervision of dr hab. Eng. Ewa Felis and employees of the Faculty of Chemistry. The researchers will collaborate with the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center in Gebze, Turkey.
