The consortium consisting of the Silesian University of Technology, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU and the City Hospital No. 4 in Gliwice received funding for the implementation of the project entitled "Non-invasivE iN-vivo assessmenT Human aRtery wALls (acronym ENTHRAL)”.
The stiffening of the blood vessel walls is primarily caused by the aging process of the body. As a result, the diameter of large arteries and the thickness of their walls increase. Measuring the stiffness of the arterial system is a valuable index used by cardiologists in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the project is to develop a non-invasive technique for measuring the local stiffness of arterial walls. In the first stage, the new approach is tested on a specially constructed installation (phantom). The final stage of the project will be a medical experiment in which the deformation of the carotid artery walls under the influence of cyclic pressure changes caused by contraction of the heart muscle will be measured using an ultrasound scanner. From these deformations, the stiffness of the artery walls will be determined.
The project coordinator is prof. Ryszard Białecki. The project will be implemented by the team of the biomed~lab of the Department of Thermal Technology. The main investigators will be members of this team - Dr hab. Ziemowit Ostrowski and Dr hab. Wojciech Adamczyk, Assoc. Prof. In addition, the project will be supported by employees of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, incl. prof. Ewa Piętka and Dr hab. Wojciech Wolański, Assoc. Prof.
