The first stage of the “STEM Innovation Contest” has ended
The competition, organized as part of the EURECA-PRO consortium, consists in solving real problems posed by industrial partners by students. The jury selected the winning team from among three student teams, which will first implement the proposed solution, and in July will take part in the finals of the competition at Hasselt University in Belgium.
The winners of the first stage of the competition are the AvGeeks group, composed of students of the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering. They took up the challenge of introducing a solution that would increase the safety of bicycle traffic participants. Students under the supervision of a mentor, dr hab. Eng. Damian Hadryś, prof. SUT, vice-dean for education of the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering, designed an innovative bicycle helmet.
- There are many benefits of participating in this competition, it is primarily the opportunity to respond to real, current problems faced by the industrial partners of the EURECA-PRO project, it is also the opportunity to deepen your knowledge, acquire practical skills, and cooperate in a team. For mentors, in turn, it is an opportunity to gain their successors in science. - suggested dr hab. Eng. Edyta Hetmaniok, vice-dean for education at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, coordinator of the competition at the Silesian University of Technology.
“STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Innovation Contest" promotes the participation of women in this scientific competition - according to the regulations, there must be at least one female student in each team. The jury composed of scientists and a representative of the industry emphasized that the level of all presentations was very high.
– All competition solutions presented today were innovative in terms of sustainable consumption and production, all groups paid attention to ensure that their solutions were environmentally friendly, did not produce waste, and used innovative biodegradable materials. All this, of course, is part of the concept of the European University EURECA-PRO, which implements the 12th UN sustainable development goal - sustainable consumption and production. - said Prof. dr hab. Eng. Anna Chrobok, director of the College of Studies and vice-president of the Education Council at EURECA-PRO.
This is the second edition of the "STEM Innovation Contest", last year's premiere edition was won by the team of the Silesian University of Technology from the Faculty of Materials Engineering. Their project concerned the creation of a structural functional material using inorganic chemical production waste. The representatives of our University in this year's finals will be the winning AvGeeks team selected in the first stage of the competition and 3 international teams composed of students of the Silesian University of Technology and partner universities in the EURECA-PRO consortium. Good luck!
