Young people open to physics

On March 28th, an open day was once again organized at the Institute of Physics - Centre for Science and Education of the Silesian University of Technology under the slogan “Open up to physics”. More than 200 secondary school pupils came to the Centre for New Technologies of the Silesian University of Technology in order to learn about the offer of education and take part in workshops and field games.

Secondary school pupils and their teachers were welcomed by the Director of the Institute of Physics - Centre for Science and Education, Dr Hab. Eng. Grzegorz Adamiec, Prof. SUT and the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs and Education Dr Hab. Eng. Sławomira Pawełczyk, Prof. SUT, who presented an offer of education in the fields of technical physics and geoinformatics.

- “This event is very important to us. This is a great opportunity to present our didactic offer. In addition, young people can get to know scientists and visit laboratories. I am so glad that there are so many of them today. I hope that the trend in which we have more students every year will be maintained.” - explains Director Grzegorz Adamiec.

The special guest of this year’s Open Day was Prof. Dr Hab. Andrzej Wysmołek from the University of Warsaw, who gave a popular science lecture “Electricity from amber to neurons”.

Physics is a very modern science and it is on it that the development of our civilizations depends. I presented a lecture on electricity, which fascinated the ancient Greeks. I wanted to show that without electricity we are not able to live and to make young people aware that physics is a science that does not age - explains Prof. Andrzej Wysmołek.

Pupils from eight schools from the Silesian and Opole voivodeships came in the CNT. Scientists of the Institute of Physics prepared for them a lot of interesting presentations such as “Thomson lamp and geometric optics,” “Vacuum optics” or “Demonstrator of acoustic and mechanical waves.” The young people visited the laboratories with interest and also talked with students from the science clubs.

- “I am glad I could take part in the open day. I loved the lecture, especially since there were a lot of experiments. And the field game itself is a very nice way to get to know the building, laboratories and talk to scientists and learn more about studies” - says Mateusz, a pupil of the third Secondary Comprehensive School in Gliwice.

- “Pupils could not only visit our laboratories and take part in workshops, but also try their hand at a field game to which each school could submit one team. The participants, moving with a map around the building, had to perform various tasks.” -- says Dr Eng. Justyna Juszczyk-Synowiec, one of the organizers of the event. “We wanted to show them what we do on a daily basis and present physics in such a way that the students would not be afraid of it, that it would be interesting and attractive for them”.
