Workshops "Popularization and communication of science in Poland" at the Silesian University of Technology
Dynamic development of science popularization, equipping people with appropriate competences, cooperation with the media and business, the need to disseminate research results within projects. These are just a few of the aspects that will be addressed during the "Popularization and communication of science in Poland" workshops taking place at the Silesian University of Technology on April 8th, 2024.
Last year's debate "Popularization and communication of science in Poland - opportunities and challenges", organized in March 2023 at the Silesian University of Technology by the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology and the Council for the Promotion of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, indicated the direction for further development of scientific communication and popularization of science in Poland. It also became a contribution to further cooperation in creating an environment conducive to effective and substantive scientific communication.
This year, the event will be held in the form of workshops divided into 4 thematic areas and moderated by specialist practitioners in the following topics:
Panel 1: Popularization of science at university
Moderators: dr hab. Wojciech Glac, prof. UG (University of Gdańsk, director of the UG Science Popularization Centre) and dr hab. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, prof. SUT (Silesian University of Technology, director of the Science Popularization Centre at SUT, Council for the Promotion of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences)
Panel 2: Occupation– science populariser
Moderators: Elżbieta Pogoda (Association of Science Advocates, LabiQ) and Mariusz Gogól (Association of Science Advocates, Mariusz Gogól Education & Science Communication)
Panel 3: Science in the media
Moderators: Agnieszka Kliks-Pudlik (Science in Poland) and Mateusz Lipka (ProScience)
Panel 4: Scientific communication to society and business
Moderators: Alicja Harackiewicz (director of the Experiment Science Centre in Gdynia, SPIN Association) and Natalia Osica (managing director of ProScience).
The starting point for the work will be the issues raised during last year's debate (which can be found in the article "Popularization and communication of science in Poland - opportunities and challenges" ; publication in the " Bulletin of the Silesian University of Technology", No. 12 (360) 2023, pp. 21- 27), and as a result, guidelines for introducing specific changes in the implementation of tasks communicating science to society.
The workshop "Popularization and communication of science in Poland" will be held on April 8th at 10:00-15:00 at the Student Culture Centre "Mrowisko" in Gliwice.
Participation in the event is free of charge. To participate, you must register for the selected panel using the application form. Note: a participant can only register for one panel. 4 panels take place simultaneously from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The organizer of the workshops is the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. The patron of the event was the Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland. The media patron is the "Science in Poland" website. The workshop partner is Pro Science.
The event was organized as part of the grant for Science Dissemination Activities (DUN) of the Polish Academy of Sciences 2024.
