What will young scientists surprise us with? The final of the Silesian edition of three Minute Thesis® 2024
In a 3-minute science story, we get more than just dry facts and definitions of concepts. It is, above, all the emotions accompanying scientific passion and curiosity about new solutions improving life. We are looking forward to the final of the Silesian edition of the three Minute Thesis® competition on November 29, 2024, in which ten doctoral students of Silesian universities will perform.
Three Minute Thesis® is a competition in the field of scientific communication. It is an opportunity for PhD students to prove themselves during public speaking. They must be extremely synthetic (due to the time limit – only 3 minutes!) and interesting and understandable for recipients from outside the academic community.
In this year’s final of the Silesian edition of 3MT®, ten young scientists will be seen on the stage of CKS “Mrowisko” in Gliwice. These are representatives of 3 Silesian universities – Silesian University of Technology, Silesian Medical University and University of Silesia – thanks to which the audience will receive a dose of knowledge from many areas of science. An important aspect of the story of doctorates is to explain why they are important to society. The topics discussed by the finalists do not raise doubts that these are extremely valuable works for many areas of our lives. They concern, among others, the treatment of cancer diseases, engineering support for ophthalmology, energy transformations in Silesia, methods used in modern education, prevention of the exclusion of the elderly.
The presentations of the ten finalists will be judged by a jury consisting of experts in scientific communication, representatives of Silesian universities, media, and business. An important voice will also have the audience in CKS “Mrowisko” – everyone will be able to vote for the chosen speech. The participant with the highest number of points will receive the Audience Award.
The final will take place on Friday, November 29th , at 18:00 in the theatre hall of CKS “Mrowisko” (ul Pszczyńska 85 in Gliwice). Admission to this event free.
The competition will also be available in streaming on the YouTube channel of the Silesian University of Technology (note: The audience vote applies only to people gathered in CKS “Mrowisko”).
The Silesian edition of the three Minute Thesis® competition is organized by the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology and the University Self-Government Council of the Doctoral Students of the Silesian University of Technology. The honorary patronage was taken by the Katowice Special Economic Zone – the founder of the award. The patronage over the Competitions was taken by: President of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland, National Representation of PhD students, EURECA-PRO. The sponsors of the financial prizes were: AIUT, JAS FBG, “Forum” Shopping Centre. The sponsor of the Engineering Award is: EMT Systems. The book awards were sponsored by Helion Group.
The 7th Silesian edition of the three Minute Thesis® is taking place in the City – Region – Academy band as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. The event is co-financed by the Silesian Voivodeship - Co-organizer of the European City of Science Katowice 2024.
