Valuable knowledge gained at the Security Day at the Silesian University of Technology

For the second time, on the 11th of May, a Security Day took place at the Silesian University of Technology.  For several hours, participants could get information on first aid, ergonomics and how to react in an emergency situation.

During the event,  the stands were prepared by: Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Gliwice, Municipal Police Headquarters in Gliwice, Municipal Guard in Gliwice, District Sanitary Inspector in Gliwice, Social Insurance Institution, National Labour Inspectorate,  “Zdążyć przez Rakiem” Foundation , Student Research Club “Office of Uninhibited Need to Inform about OHS Safety”, Student Research Club “Bezpieczna Ściana”, Department of Safety Engineering and Health and Safety Inspectorate of the Silesian University of Technology. Experts gladly answered questions about dangerous situations and threats that may occur in the academic environment and explained what actions to take in crisis situations.

Students, scientists, employees of our University, as well as the Rector’s authorities, participated in numerous exercises and demonstrations.

- This is an important event that is open to the public. It is organized not only for students – we also invited students of our Academic Secondary Comprehensive School to participate, but also people visiting the University’s campus at that time – says the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Prof Dr Hab. Eng. Bożena Skołud. - I think that awareness about security is growing in the society, but we still have very little practical knowledge, so here at several stands there is an opportunity to check and learn how to act in critical situations.

- We could all learn how to keep safe not only on campus but also in our homes, because, for example, firefighters explained how to secure our homes. Of course, representatives of the University were present here, who every day make sure that at the Silesian University of Technology we feel safe. I am glad that the National Labour Inspectorate, with which we cooperate well in the context of workplaces in our laboratories, has also attended the event. I also hope that thanks to this event students will be interested in this subject in the context of their future work. Because they are attractive, interesting, and certainly needed professions - says the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk.

Participants could also learn how to use the AED, gain knowledge in the field of health and cancer prevention, or take advantage of virtual reality experiences (VR goggles). Many have tried their hand in training phantoms exercises with the help of experts from the OHS Inspectorate of the Silesian University of Technology.

- These are important skills that are always worth repeating and consolidating, because you never know when we will have to use them and then they are really useful – says Marcin, a student of our University, who, together with his colleague Kacper also visited the Police stand, where they wanted to learn more about weapons and equipment.

Student Research Clubs of our University had also their stands during the event.

- We have prepared two stands. The first one is related to the infographics that exists at our University – these are signs related to orders, prohibitions, infographics indicating places where people should gather in case of an emergency, the entire evacuation plan, and places where first aid is provided. We also presented tips on ergonomics and proper body posture when working at the screen monitor, but also when reading books and just rest - says Dr Hab. Eng. Aneta Grodzicka, Prof. SUT, the scientific supervisor of the Student Research Club “Bezpieczna Ściana.”

It is worth reminding that at the Silesian University of Technology there is a 24-hour emergency number of the Academic Guard (32 400 30 30).
