Urban Hackathon for Student Campus Spaces

As part of the cooperation of M. Eng. Arch. Dominika Verešova, PhD student of the Department of Urban and Spatial Planning with the University of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Urban Hackathon for Student Campus Spaces (UH4SCS) project took place at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology. It was implemented as part of the V4 Gen Mini-Grants program. The event was attended by students and PhD students from three universities: Silesian University of Technology, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

The participants took part in lectures and discussions, and above all in the 48-hour Urban Hackathon, which aimed to develop a concept for the revitalization of student spaces destroyed as a result of hostilities on the Kharkiv campus.  During the first days of the event, introductory lectures on the transformations of the Silesian University of Technology campus, neurourban planning and a lecture on university spaces during the war were held.

The 48-hour Urban Hackathon was a unique educational experience in which interdisciplinary teams of students combined knowledge of urban planning, geography, architecture, and spatial planning to jointly explore solutions for the future of academic spaces. The project has shown that science, education, and international cooperation can be the driving force behind the reconstruction and creation of crisis-resistant academic spaces.

The result of the work were design posters and short presentations of the teams, which were presented during the September 19 exhibition in the X Building of the Faculty of Architecture (10, Strzody Street in Gliwice). The best concepts were awarded by a jury composed of scientists and project supervisors. The exhibition can be viewed until September 26th.

The UH4SCS project is also the beginning of a long-term cooperation, as already in the winter semester 2025/2026 universities plan to continue joint activities under the Project-Based Learning (PBL) program.
