This was a great time for new students of the Silesian University of Technology

The events in which the students of the first year participated, turned out to be a great success. A lot of people took part in the traditional adaptation days and the city game on the occasion of Zero Day at the Silesian University of Technology.

It all started with the legendary “Adapciak,” a camp for first-year students organized by the Student Self-Government, which this year took place on the 19th -26th September on the campus of our University and in Głuchołazy in the “Banderoza” Centre. This initiative is set in a different universe every year. This time it was held under the slogan “Gryfno Rajza” but this time on the Black Pearl.”

- Referring to Pirates of the Caribbean, we wanted to reproduce this atmosphere with various games - says Oskar Hajda from the Student Self-Government. - “Adapciak” helps young people make their first student acquaintances, friendships. This is important at the beginning of a new stage in their lives.

- This year 150 people took part in “Adapciak”, last year there were even more. It can be seen that such forms of integration and learning about student culture are of great interest – adds the President of the Student Self-Government Błażej Brudny. - If I were to start my studies again, I would like to experience something similar. It would certainly help me at the beginning. I think that as a local government we have done a great job, and I thank everyone who contributed to this.

On the first day of “Adapciak,” the participants were greeted by the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Anna Chrobok

- Unfortunately, young people often do not finish their first year of study. Therefore, at the Silesian University of Technology, we have taken many steps to provide them with the greatest possible support - especially during the first semester. I hope that thanks to this, as many people as possible will pass the examination sessions and we will meet them during the second year of studies - says Vice-Rector Anna Chrobok. - We try to make new students feel at home at our University, so that they can quickly integrate with their new colleagues – not only from the first year of studies, but also older ones. They can help them in different situations, new to them, because they already know this place better.

The participants of the Adapciak had the opportunity to take part in a city game, as well as meet people who care about students at our University.

- There was a barbecue, as well as karaoke during which the participants sang a song with their supervisor. The first night in the student dormitory was certainly a great adventure for them. This is the place where some of them will spend a large part of the next five years of their life. I wish them that - said Błażej Brudny.

In the city game on the occasion of Zero Day, which began on October 2nd in front of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, all willing students could participate forming teams.

- This is an idea of the Silesian University of Technology Student Self-Government in cooperation with the University. We wanted to help first-year students integrate, get to know our campus, to see where the Faculties are located. They also had the opportunity to get to know Gliwice better – for example, one of the tasks had to be completed on the market square – explains Oskar Hajda. - All the students could participate in the game, although we counted the most on the participation of first-year students. We were not disappointed. Young people like such games, so the turnout was definitely good.

The tasks included matching photos of people associated with the University and the city to their functions, guessing words in different languages, as well as arcade tasks.

- The people from our team got to know one another thanks to the field game. It’s a great idea and it’s great that a date before start of our studies was chosen. I believe that every University should organize such a thing - says Jan Król, a first-year student in the field of automation and industrial robotics.

The final of the game took place in the Student Culture Centre “Mrowisko.” There, the three best teams received awards from the hands of Vice-Rector Anna Chrobok, Director of CKS “Mrowisko” Katarzyna Jankowska and Błażej Brudny.

- I am glad that the Student Self-Government is so actively involved in the activities addressed to students. The idea of organizing a city game shows their great creativity – praised the Vice-Rector Anna Chrobok.

- The energy and the presence of these young people is something that always charges us for the whole year. I love October when new people come to visit us. I invite all students to our Student Culture Centre “Mrowisko.” There is something for everyone – from concerts, performances to board games and karaoke. This place is open for them every day – invites Director Katarzyna Jankowska.
