Third place in the Robo Challenge 2023 competition for students of the Silesian University of Technology

Success of students of the Silesian University of Technology at the Robo Challenge 2023 competition. Our representatives took third place.

The competition took place on September 27-28, 2023, in the Exhibition and Congress Centre in Opole. The competition involved programming robots and creating Robo Challenge robotic stations. The event was organized by Fanuc.

It was the third edition of this event. Competitors from all over Poland took part in the competition: 8 teams consisting of students of universities and scientific clubs and 8 teams of employees of companies professionally involved in the integration of robots in industry.

The group of student teams also included representatives of the Silesian University of Technology from the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Our team under the supervision of prof. Piotr Cheluszka and Grzegorz Głuszka, M.A. from the Department of Mining Mechanization and Robotization, won third place. The following people took part in the competition:

  • Szymon Klaużyński – student of the 6th semester, Automation and Industrial Computer Science,
  • Dawid Stanchły – student of the 6th semester , Automation and Industrial Computer Science

from the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation.

  • Jakub Krzus – student, 1st semester, Mechatronics (2nd cycle studies) from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering

The competition organizers have prepared 18 tasks thematically related to programming industrial robots, programming PLC controllers and configuring robotic applications for various industrial purposes (including: welding, welding, assembly, processing of elements, cooperation of robots with machining centres, transport, storage, painting, use of vision systems and cobots), from which individual teams randomly selected 10 tasks to be carried out. The competitors had 40 minutes for each task. The supervisors of each competition position assessed the subsequent stages of task implementation (each task consisted of four stages) and awarded points for completing them in a shorter time than planned by the organizers. What mattered was knowledge, manual skills, and often cunning and speed of decision-making and action.

The competition among student teams was extremely fierce and the competition was very strong. The participants included: teams from the Warsaw, Wrocław and Krakow Universities of Technology. After each task, the score was announced by the competition jury. The order of the teams on the scoreboard changed like in a kaleidoscope. After the first day of the competition (after six tasks), our students were classified in 4th place, although after four tasks they took the lead). On the second day of the competition, thanks to the great mobilization of our competitors, they managed to jump on the podium.

The satisfaction of achieving a high place and valuable gifts from the organizers were a reward for the involvement of our students in preparations for the competition (after all, it was the holiday period) and participation in these competitions. The possibility of direct contact, as part of the Robo Challenge competition, with the latest solutions in the field of industrial robotics and meeting with specialists - practitioners dealing with the robotization of industrial processes on a daily basis were an invaluable source of practical knowledge for the students and a training ground that gave them the opportunity to test their theoretical knowledge as well as skills. manual, necessary to work with robots.
