They competed in the XXXII National Chemical Competition

On March the 19th, the final of the XXXII National Chemical Competition took place at the Faculty of Chemistry. Thirty participants from secondary schools from all over Poland had to deal with a laboratory task. The winner was Małgorzata Haszler from Adam Mickiewicz Secondary Comprehensive School nb 3 in Wrocław.

As in previous years, the competition consisted of two stages. To get to the finals, at the beginning of March the participants had to go through the written part.  In the second, decisive stage, they had to face a real test in laboratory tasks.

This year, more than 100 people joined the first stage. Thirty participants, mainly from the Silesian Voivodeship, competed in the final, but there were also pupils from Słupsk or Lubartów – explains the chairman of the organizing committee of the competition Dr Hab. Eng. Tomasz Krawczyk, Prof. SUT from the Faculty of Chemistry. – In the final task, the participants had samples of solutions at their disposal. They knew what these solutions were, but they were not assigned to specific tubes. By mixing these reagents together in a suitable manner, they were tasked with discovering their composition.

The patronage over the competition is held by the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Wojciech Simka and Chairman of the Gliwice Branch of the Polish Chemical Society Dr Hab. Jakub Adamek Prof. SUT.

- This is a prestigious and one of the oldest competitions of this type organized in our country by universities, with attractive prizes. It is also an opportunity for the Faculty to show potential candidates for studies our capabilities - they faced the final task in our modern laboratories. In addition to the competition, the youth and their teachers also had the opportunity to visit other laboratories and get to know our staff – says the Dean Wojciech Simka. – The organization of this event would not be possible without the sponsors of the competition. These are Voigt, Energopomiar, NITROERG KGHM Group, Ekomax, SyntalPharma and the Polish Chemical Society, whom we thank very much.

During the competition, participants had literature at their disposal, but at the same time limited time. The competition was supervised by Dr Hab. Eng. Tomasz Krawczyk, Prof. SUT, and Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Agata Jakóbik-Kolon. Finally, in this year’s edition, the best was Małgorzata Haszler from the Adam Mickiewicz Secondary Comprehensive School nb 3 in Wrocław., who entered the competition for the third time.

- I am very happy with this win, because in previous editions I was in second place twice. The final task caused me a bit of difficulty, but in the end, I managed to achieve a lot of success – says Małgorzata Haszler.
