There is an agreement on Scientific Program for Silesia

On the 9th of May , Katowice hosted the Forum on the Future of the City of Science, during which last year’s celebrations of the European City of Science 2024 were summarized and  an agreement was signed on cooperation in the implementation of the Scientific Program for Silesia in the field of organizing regional competitions for research projects.

More than 4 thousand scientists and popularisers hosted 5 951 meetings and events, attended by 600 thousand participants from 43 countries. The events took place in almost 500 locations in 33 cities of the Silesian Voivodeship. This is how the annual celebrations of the European City of Science Katowice 2024 were summarized in numbers. The summary was made during the Forum on the Future of the City of Science, which took place on May 9th in Katowice at the University of Silesia. The partner of the events was, among others, the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis. President Kazimierz Karolczak said with conviction that the initiatives that started a year ago will grow.

– “Thanks to the European City of Science, we believed in ourselves and in the fact that science is a great potential of Silesia” – he noted.

During the Forum, coordinators of individual activities within the European City of Science met, among others those responsible for, 50 weeks of the City of Science, which in total attracted over 82 thousand people to 2 006 events  taking place in the City-Region-Academy band, which took place in 28 cities.

From all this, a lot of memories, experiences and initiatives have been born, some of which will continue in the coming years.

However, what will most significantly contribute to the effect of the cooperation of universities within the Academic Consortium – Katowice City of Science will be the Scientific Program for Silesia. It is an initiative that assumes organizing competitions to support scientific research. The aim of the program is to conduct research, research and development and artistic activities for the transformation of the region. The program is also intended to contribute to strengthening the cooperation of the scientific community with the socio-economic and industrial environment.

Among the signatories of the agreement was the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk, who pointed out that this is a great opportunity to implement joint actions to solve problems in the region.

- “Silesian University of Technology is the initiator of these activities. Due to the fact that we proposed to other universities such a formula of solving problems, which are PBL Projects. We have recently decided the competition and we already know that with the University of Silesia we will implement 17 such projects, with the Silesian Medical University – 11, with the remaining slightly less” – said the Rector Pawełczyk. – “The regulations of the Scientific Program for Silesia will be based on similar principles. It will be a good practice, we hope that it will embolden our scientists from the region to take joint action,” he added.
