The University Secondary Schools of the Silesian University of Technology inaugurated the new school year
For the fifth time, the Academic Secondary Schools of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice and Rybnik have started the new school year. The ceremony was attended by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, as well as deans of several faculties of the University.
- Aware of the dignity and duties of a student of the Academic Secondary School of the Silesian University of Technology, I solemnly vow to serve the motherland by conscientiously acquiring knowledge and skills, in the spirit of truth, freedom and responsibility. I vow to show respect to teachers and the student community - the students of ALO (University Secondary Schools) promised today during the inauguration of the school year. The Gliwice celebrations took place in “Mrowisko”, while the Rybnik celebrations - in the new school's premises at Kościuszki Street.
- This is the fifth inauguration of the school year. This short period was extremely difficult. It is the time of a change in the secondary education system, departure from lower secondary schools, and at the time when the secondary school was being created. It is also the time of the pandemic and now the war in Ukraine. (...) However, despite this, or maybe precisely because it functioned in such a difficult period, the school strengthened its position on the educational market in Gliwice. At the moment, it is one of the leading schools in Gliwice, chosen by the best candidates - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

- What distinguishes us from other schools is this "polytechnic gear", i.e., the logo of the Silesian University of Technology and the fact that we can carry out many initiatives together with the University. In this way, we can offer students the potential of the University of Technology, we are talking here about infrastructure and, of course, the potential of research workers who also partially work with us, as well as about many additional activities that we carry out together with the University of Technology - said the school's director, Dr. Małgorzata Borysławska.
The academic secondary schools of the Silesian University of Technology offer students two educational profiles: polytechnic and architectural. Thanks to close cooperation with the University, they offer a great opportunity to students who associate their future with exact sciences or architecture. - Our students can take advantage of the offer of student research clubs. In the studios and laboratories of the Silesian University of Technology, they can discover and develop their talents and research passions. Gifted students are included in the "Spread Your Wings" mentoring program at the SUT. They can also participate in selected classes at the University with the possibility of completing them before starting their studies at the Silesian University of Technology. They successfully participate in the competition "For the golden index of the Silesian University of Technology" and in the competition "Science in layman terms - ALO miniatures" - said Krzysztof Lazaj, director of ALO in Rybnik.

From year to year, the Academic Secondary Schools are selected by more and more students. This year, there were two candidates for one place. The new school year at the facility in Rybnik was started by 52 new students, while in Gliwice by 53.
- I intend to study architecture in the future and become an architect. I think that this school is the best choice because there are drawing and art history classes here - said Amelia Dobełek, a new ALO student in Gliwice, who started her studies in an architectural class. In turn, Aleksandra Słota will study in a class with a polytechnic profile. - My big dream is to become a physicist; do science and I think that this school will give me a great foundation to achieve this goal - she admitted.
ALO graduates often continue their education at our University. - This year, 70 percent of high school graduates from our school will study at the Silesian University of Technology - summed up the director of the facility in Gliwice, Dr. Małgorzata Borysławska.
