The Student Activity Centre (SAC) was established at the Katowice campus of the Silesian University of Technology
Unique apparatus, the latest software, a full set of power tools - in short, everything that is necessary to bring the boldest ideas of students to life. The Student Activity Centre in Katowice is a modern space where young scientists will be able to develop creatively.
Technology hall in the building at 8, Krasińskiego Street and the adjacent rooms have become a new workshop, technological and laboratory space. Projects of student research clubs and Project Based Learning will be implemented here. SAC equipment allows to implement original engineering ideas, also developed outside of classes.
- The SAC includes, among others: modern numerically controlled plasma burner, CNC lathe and EDM machine, 3D scanning and printing system, set of furnaces for heat treatment, melting and casting even up to 2200 o C. In addition, students have at their disposal a full set of power tools, presses, a painting and sandblasting chamber - says prof. Janusz Adamiec, Vice-Dean for Cooperation and Development at the Faculty of Materials Engineering and coordinator of the SAC project.

The Student Activity Centre is another zone on the campus of the university in Katowice, next to the Space of Innovation and Creativity, which has been operating since 2021, and was created for young scientists. All this to help students not only in gaining education, but also in developing their passions and interests.
- Thanks to this, we have the opportunity to develop our projects on the basis of very modern technological solutions, very modern machines, and thus we give them more chances to become known on a global scale. It is also greater opportunities for the development of our ideas, creativity and creative invention of students - argued Anna Piechowska, chairman of Council of the Self-Government of the Faculty of Materials Engineering.

The establishment of the Student Activity Centre is part of the Development Strategy of the Silesian University of Technology for 2016-2026 and the "Initiative of Excellence - Research University" Program.
– Currently, we need to develop the skills of our students that are perceived as competences of the future, i.e., creativity, acting in complex environments, including intercultural ones. These features should be possessed by a future graduate of a secondary technical school - a creator of technological development, and thus civilizational progress - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk. – Student activity centres are being established on all campuses of the Silesian University of Technology. At the moment, we are in the process of creating a large centre in Gliwice, and then we will launch a centre in Zabrze, so that all students of our university have the opportunity to develop their interests, implement projects and fulfil their dreams. - added the rector.

As part of the implemented PBL projects, students in international and inter-faculty groups and by collaborating with secondary comprehensive school and secondary technical school pupils gain knowledge, competences and skills, the ability to make decisions, learn to achieve goals through teamwork and establish international, inter-university and inter-faculty contacts as well as gain experience in cooperation with the socio-economic environment.
– Such a space for students of the Silesian University of Technology ensures high-quality education at university and at the doctoral school, based on research and innovation, in cooperation with the best scientific and educational units and industrial partners, and by introducing and disseminating modern methods and forms of education, in particular project- and problem-oriented (PBL) ones - sums up prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz , Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education at the Silesian University of Technology.
The opening of the Student Activity Centre is another step in the development of the Katowice campus. The authorities of the university and the city of Katowice strive to close the space between the buildings of the Silesian University of Technology at Krasińskiego Street and create an interesting place serving not only students but also residents of the city.
