The Silesian University of Technology is a sports leader among Silesian universities
The Silesian University of Technology won the general classification of this year's Silesian Academic Championships, and our student became the "Athlete of the Year". The 12th Gala of Silesian Academic Sports was held in Dąbrowa Górnicza, during which awards were given to distinguished athletes.
Athletes from the Silesian University of Technology in the 2021/22 season won as many as nineteen gold medals. Thus, we hold the first place in the Academic Championships of Silesia. Additionally, our student Agata Sitko - a world record holder in powerlifting - received the Silesian Griffin award for the athlete of the year. The Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Promotion, dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Trawiński, prof. of SUT and the director of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology dr Krzysztof Czapla, prof. of SUT.
-“ The Silesian University of Technology has been supporting its students - athletes and employees - athletes for many years. (…) We have appropriate scholarships, and there is also support in terms of infrastructure and its modernization. Sport shapes the character and teaches how to manage time well. This is very important for both a student and a researcher. Sport is also a springboard, a moment of relaxation, which is necessary, especially when we sit for many hours - working on projects or preparing for classes” - said Vice-Rector Dr Eng. Tomasz Trawiński, prof. of Silesian University of Technology
In the medal classification among Silesian universities, the Silesian University of Technology is second to none.
- “When it comes to the Silesian Academic Championships, we are the leader, and it is a great satisfaction. We took part in over forty sports disciplines and won as many as nineteen gold medals. (..) We have the support of our university authorities all the time, we have a well-developed sports infrastructure. Without this support, there would not be so many successes” - emphasized the director of the Sports Centre of SUT, Dr Krzysztof Czapla, prof. of Silesian University of Technology
In the ranking of Silesian Academic Championship, among state universities, the Silesian University of Technology came first, followed by Academy of Physical Education in Katowice and the University of Silesia. In turn, in the general classification of the Polish Academic Championships, we took seventh place, and among technical universities - fourth.
-“ Undoubtedly, the Silesian University of Technology is a leader. This is due to the SUT Sports Centre and the good attitude of the university authorities, because, unfortunately, I am sorry to say that this is not the case everywhere. So these successes are not surprising, although they are burdened with great organizational and sports effort” - said the president of AZS Katowice, Bogusław Oleksy.
During this year's Gala of Silesian Academic Sport, after a 3-year break caused by a pandemic, the Silesian Griffins were also awarded. In the "Athlete of the Year" category, the award was given to our student from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Agata Sitko, who is a world record holder in powerlifting.
- “Sport is my whole life. It gives me a lot of joy; thanks to it I have met many good friends. I am glad that my achievements and hard work are appreciated. I am proud that I received this award. I am glad that the Silesian University of Technology is present at the Polish Academic Championships, we have a lot of sports associations, sections and this is very good for young people who want to develop in sport” - said Agata Sitko.
The Silesian Academic Sport Gala was held for the twelfth time. It is an opportunity to summarize the activities of the Silesian AZS, but above all, to summarize the achievements of the young athletes who take part in it.
